982.jpg [quote:1pqtnbtj]Every player in our squad could probably earn more money with another club. But they prefer to sacrifice a few extra quid in their back pocket to share special memories. And playing at a place like Old Trafford on a night like this makes it all worthwhile.[/quote:1pqtnbtj]

| Quote: DHM "Gareth, would you not say that part of Tony Smith's appeal was that Leeds actually played with considerble flair when he was in charge? Sometimes we won spectactularly and other times we frustratingly lost. With Smith, he got the guys to open out when possible and then in 2004 we played one of the most skillful and intense, but ultimately tight GF's on record against the Bulls. I think Smith wanted Leeds to play attractive footy then tighten up come the business end of the season. I suspect (though I don't know) that McDermott wants something similar. He has less tools as well, he doesn't have Senior or Lauititi in their prime, he doesn't have McGuire at all at the moment, but he does have some promising youngsters who he maybe wants to see palying their natural game at whatever cost as this will benefit the club in the long run.
I understand that completion and mistake free rugby are very desirable in certain games, but just maybe we are playing the long game here and some of the guys are learning at the moment.'"
I hope you're right but my recollection is Smith's teams generally cut free and loose in the 2nd half of games after building up momentum and a head of steam and tiring the opposition with a more controlled approach in the 1st half.
If McDermott doesn't think the players have the skills set to implement his game plan he's an even worse coach for sticking to it, IMHO.
I hope we're playing the long game but if I were McDermott I'd be more worried about making sure I was involved in the short to medium game.
We're not a million miles away. He doesn't have to abandon his principals just get a more patient balance.

On principles ..how many American head teachers is he abandoning exactly ?
Up until now I have been reticent to join the clamour for dispensing with the coach..... Without seeing the embarrasing half time lack of animation I would have definitely said give the guy more time after the Friday performance.
However surely inspiration from any " boss " is critical in getting the best from your team ? Didn't appear there was much evidence of that.
Did the team raise its game first half despite the coach not because of him ? Will be interesting to see how the team performs against H K R

| C'mon Nantwich you saw 30 seconds of the dressing room with no sound how's that long enough to judge how he is as an inspirational coach or otherwise?

I did state "didn't [iappear[/i"
I would not condemn the man with circumstantial 'evidence' only......but you must admit it didn't [iappear [/igood ?? He looked as though he just wanted to be invisible and lost for inspirational words.

No I haven't.
There's a difference between making an observation where there is an APPARENT cause for concern ...and condemning outright.
It would take more investigation and research to do that: commensurate with what I stated.

38511.jpg [b:3v5chy3z]Brian McDermott paraphrased Peter Fox.
"He'd say if we had 13 Bernard Dwyers we wouldn't lose many RL games. It's the same for us with JJB"[/b:3v5chy3z]:38511.jpg |

| Quote: RugbyLeague56 "As a Harlequins RL fan who was delighted to see Brian McDermott leave, I wonder how Leeds' fans are feeling about his appointment as your new coach?
Any thoughts?'"
i actually think that brian is going down the correct road regarding the style of footy he wants his side to play, whether or not it is deemed successful or actually wins any silverware during his tenure only time will tell
those opposed to his style must love watching wrestle mania?
i am prepared to give brian the length of his contract at the club to deliver the goods, not like some knee jerk supporters that would have him out already

| I don't know why your banging on about your coach, the problem is the board, what the hell do they do with the cash? You have not invested in your side for a few seasons now, you have let class players leave without replacing, you have allowed an aging squad to go past their sell by date and not replaced and players have gone totally of the boil and zero done about it, same old, same old and watch the decline, get off the coaches back and see the real problems.

| He does have a point though.
Mid season - Leeds dispence with two props - people assume it's to free up space on the cap, one less quota player and wonder aloud 'who is coming in?'
They've had their answer.

1230.gif “You are playing a game of football this afternoon but more than that you are playing for England, and more even than that, you are playing for right versus wrong. You will win because you have to win. Don’t forget that message from home. England expects every one of you to do his duty.”:1230.gif |

Ah f**k it, those idiots will come along every week anyway
and they will even feel a smug satisfaction that they are loyal and know more than those who are not there or questioning those in charge whilst the decline has been allowed to continue
and we can "reward" them by offering them a fiver off that merchandise we cant sell
now, how else can we reduce the wage bill?

Thats all very true.
Look at it this way - what is the point in having the most successful season in the clubs history this year when for part of next season you already know that your capacity is going to be severely affected (lets be honest, it is...) - much better to tighten the purse now whilst still milking those who lay down and accept the milking as part of being something they call "loyal", and run at 50% of potential until the southstand development is complete and paid for (by your company not by a local council) and start again after that.
If your business can run at reduced capacity & output while you rebuild (literally) and you're happy with the numbers and more importantly you know that a percentage of your customer base will just keep handing you the money regardless of what you produce, AND that the rest will return when you have something new and shiny to sell to them, then its a great plan and Gary Hetherington is a genius.
