Yes great player.
And yes, they had to be tough and I think they have to be even tougher now. Not because the game is dirtier now but because it's harder.
The injuries were few in the 60s and have gradually increased because players have bulked up and run harder now because of the 10 metre rule.
We don't need dirty players. It's hard enough. |

Yes I can agree with that.
There again I don't think there are many/if any around worthy of the title these days. When a nonentity in the intimidation stakes like Ryan Bailey can somehow become public enemy number one it shows how sanitised the game has become. |

Ended in a broken jaw for Waddell.
You're right though, the Widnes fixture was always a cracking game, they had a row of forwards that used to scare me stood fifty yards away in the southstand, and I think that is what is missing from the game now, whenever something like Abletts tackle happens people faint in shock and wail about how disgraceful it was - but we're sanitizing the game to the point where its almost boring (almost) if we tell big daft lads that they have to be careful and think about their big hits - I recall having the same conversation with a football supporter about the modern game compared to 40 years ago when I used to watch the likes of Norman Hunter and Tommy Smith kick ten bells out of each other, my friend didn't see my point and preferred the non-contact sport that they have as a result now.
