England Grind Out Opening Series Win Against the Kiwis
The eagerly anticipated opening fixture of the three match test series against New Zealand saw England in Hull at the KCOM Stadium for the crucial first instalment.
England won the mid-season game against the Kiwi’s in Denver by 36-18 but would have to do without the likes of Gareth Widdop, Luke Gale and Ryan Hall. New Zealand travelled to England on the back of a two point victory over Australia a fortnight ago and made just one change to that winning side.
The tourists were the slight favourites with the bookies but there was little to choose between the two sides, the stage was set for a classic.

| Great win, especially with the players we have missing. Bateman, and the rest of the pack were outstanding, although Hodgson still fails to convince me at this level, and I think Flanders' international career maybe over.

| Better atmosphere at a wake.
NZ disinterested. Waste of time.

It's always the same at Hull for test matches. Shocking

Agreed about the atmosphere but the kiwis were pretty good today imo, looked far from disinterested, England did well to win it with the back line on display. Both sides will be better for that game and the last two tests should be good.

| I think Hicks must've been on the comedown from a two-day bender with Hardaker, judging by some of his decisions.

| My 8 year old was buzzing anyway. His 3rd Eng v NZ game after those at Hudds & QE Olympic stadium. Finally a win. Also I have to say, very friendly people in Hull. A security guard at The Deep let us have his taxi and the bus drivers on return journey looked after us.

Great win? I assume you mean by result?
New Zealand were far the better team, and what an embarrassing decision for that penalty try. Seen tons and tons of opportunities over recent years where you think penalty try, all of them far more legit than that, and yet they are more rare than unicorn poop. Nit sure how th3 officials came up with that.
That decision epitomised everything wrong with our game currently. Officials have really took the game so far backwards, and there appears no system in place to get these officials to improve.

| Good result. Kiwis looked the better team and carried more threat. England rely on a strong pack, but lack any cutting edge.
How you can defend the penalty try though. Its a clear knee to the head of a player whilst he's about to ground the ball. Without that contact its a try. Therefore is a penalty try. The VR was just to determine if it was a penalty try or an 8 point try

Ironically I thought Johnson had done a great job of wrapping the ball up; without the foul from D-W I’m not sure Connor grounds the ball anyway.

There have been hundreds of clearer penalty try’s not given that were far more legit than that. The yellow I could ha e understood, a penalty I could have, but not a try in a million years how they have ruled for the last decade.

| if the ruling is the same as union the guy committing the foul is classed as not being there
i dont think there is any doubt he helped the ball to not be grounded, without his help the ball would have been grounded so its a penalty try

| Connor was in the process of being wrapped and rolled. Penalty, perhaps a yellow, but def not a penalty try as far as I'm concerned.

England will have to cut out the errors a bit next week I think; NZ have great strike. When their halves put something on it looks too easy to break the line at pace. Johnson might get some stick but he was there at the Connor penalty try wrapping him up and closest man to Gildart when he scored. We don’t have halves with the same all-round game yet IMO. We have grunt in the front and some skill in the backs but the link isn’t quite there.
