[i"I broke some ribs in the game at London away last year," Kirke told the Yorkshire Evening Post.
"We were scratching around a bit for players and there's not much you can do with a rib injury anyway, so it was decided I'd play until the end of the season.
"I had pain-killing injections and it wasn't too bad, but there were times in games when the injection did wear off. That was a bit tasty, but it wasn't too bad."[/i

| I saw this Friday, and my immediate reaction was of, yet more proof that our coach is a knobjockey.
How did an average player with broken ribs still get selected above Singleton when it came to the end of season games.

| Maybe he shouldn't have had the op. I thought he had his best games I have seen him play in recent years carrying the injuries

| To be fair i thought he finsihed the last 3/4 games stronger than he had performed all year.
I do however agree with Gotcha in that WTF was our Coach doing picking him?
99% of RL players will always put their hands up to have a dig its their nature surely then that is the time it passes to teh Coaching staff to say not this week mate??
I realy hope we see a new approach to selections this year both rotational and with injuries in mind.

| If the player says he can play to capacity with a needle, and the medical staff say he's not going to do any further damage, what's the big deal?
If it had been Peacock, or Sinfield, or Watkins saying they had done exactly the same thing I'm sure the reaction would have been massively different.

| Perhaps Kirke was that pumped with pain-killers for the last few games of the season that he had the balls to run the ball in a bit harder than usual, safe in the knowledge he was going to feel any pain.
Just a theory.

Cool.
An eight and a half year old example of it not working in a one-off game.
That's a convincing argument you're putting forward there.
No, really.

It would. Of course it would. Because those three players make a very, very different contribution to performances than Kirke.
Bravo for him manning up but someone with a fit rib could conrtibute 4 carries a game surely?

It's eight and half years because there haven't been that many cases of coaches showing themselves such a knobjockey in taking that course of action.
But of course McDermott is inventive isn't he?..... No really.

Some injuries you can play with, and not affect your performance too much. Some, like an ankle or a knee are not in that category. HOwever, if he is tough/daft enough to play with broken ribs, I can't think why you would stop him

Well the main reason would be because we had a better player, who didn't have broken ribs, dropped and sat in the stands, to accommodate this tough hombre with broken ribs.
