| Our great city has plenty of excerllant sporting venues ie Elland rd,South Leeds Stadium,Headingly, and a new arena being built, not to mention others that i have forgotten. So why jepordise Rugby league this great game of ours by trying to reduce the number of teams in super league simply by placing objections to the Newmarket development programme. Super league need more teams competing not less in order to develop more young talent and hopefully attain the Australians standard of rugby league. Come on Leeds council stop being selfish and look to the future after all without competition you have no sport.

I don't think the objection is to the Rugby ground it's to the retail units etc that are also to be built on the site. It apparently would be detrimental to similar sites planned/already in south leeds. If the planning had been for just a Rugby ground I don't think there would have been an issue.

| I agree leedsowl but just so we are clearthey've declined all kinds of ££££ help for LUFC but you are correct re-Yorkshire Cricket because i was there when they agreed the ££££££ deals and it was an old boys patting each other on the back because they were members of YCCC.

| I think when councils are being stretched financially the idea of them pumping millions into facilities for the benefit of private businesses is a bit of a strange one. If Leeds Rugby want a sparkling new stand they should try an fund it themselves. One of those avenues could be a grant from the council, but if they decide that its not viable and the money should be spent on other stuff of more benefit then why should we question it?

Historically Leeds City Council has bailed Leeds Utd out to the tune of millions of pounds. Don't you remember when LUFC was on it's and the Council bought the club from them ? They later sold it back to Leeds United when they had straightened their finances out. Their was hell of a stink kicked up by the taxpayers of Leeds.

| But when they did that we werent in a recession which we are going into now. We had lots of spare money going around and we could afford to do it. How does it look if a council that is cutting jobs, closing public services such as swimming pools and libraries goes and throws a load of money at a private business to build a stand? Its not going to happen

I wasn't questioning lack of funding from the council I was questioning their refusal to pass our original plans for the South Stand development. When you consider they quibbled about the height of it by a couple of metres after allowing the huge carbuncle to be built in the cricket ground that blocks out any sunlight whatsoever from properties behind it you've go to ask questions. Shadowy figures passing stuffed envelopes around springs to mind, as alluded to in a post above. Leeds Rhinos have kept this city on the sporting map for the last 8 or 9 years and I just don't understand the council digging their heels in to hold the club back.

| But the reason the southstand was rejected was because of an action group created by the residents that would affected. The council didnt make the decission itself but it had to listen to the rejection made by the action group and also said action group had the backing of local MP Greg Mullholland. Last thing we wanted was to have the same fate as the extension made on the building on Infirmary Street at cloth hall court. They exceeded their planning permission by a couple of meters and were taken to court. The court ruled in favour of the council and they have been asked to remove the extension.
This is why planning permission has to be requested. Im not fully in the know but there are many factors that have to be taken into consideration when giving it the go-ahead. If it was the case the council just said no without any justification this challenge can be over ruled by taking it above their head. However if they have justifcation, then you have to fight this and it can get very costly

Cobblers.
You ask sports fans or members of the general public from outside the M62 corridor to name sporting teams based in Leeds, and I would quite happily bet that a much higher percentage would be able to tell you Leeds United than Leeds Rhinos.
The Rhinos would probably get about the same recognition levels as Yorkshire cricket.
The council has a job to do, namely to protect the interests of its residents. That includes ordinary households as well as businesses, indeed probably more so as businesses don't get a vote at local elections.

what you say is probably right , due largely to the mass media saturation of all things round ball , and in no small part our own councils reluctance to embrace and promote the citys one major sport success story of the last 7 or 8 years .

| The general English or British public are familiar with Headingley as a result of Botham's efforts in the 81 ashes test, for it being the site of Boycott's 100th 100 vs the Aussies & the place where Don Bradman made 300 runs in a day to win a test for Australia.
Cricket is what has put Headingley on the map not the efforts of Leeds RL or the Rhinos.
The stand that links the ground is known generally as the football stand not the rugby stand.
Sad but true.
Manchester is known the world over due to Man U, Liverpool is known through being the home of the Beatles.
The rest of the world is sadly ignorant even of the existence of Leeds.
