| Breaking news on Sky says that he has resigned.
How will he be viewed?
Good club coach, but ultimately found wanting at the highest level, or simply having to make do with what is available in Super League?

| the world cup was poor
think he has proved everywhere at club level he is a very good coach, brought success to two of the leagues biggest underachievers, and did a good job at huddersfield.
reality is the aussies could probably stick 4 teams in that comp that would have better backs than us......
you can't polish a turd.
the boys played hard and stuck with them for 60 minutes, but JP and Moz aren't getting any younger - and in certain positions we are really really struggling.
Not sure what in the short term TS could do about that.

| I think the abiding memory for me will be the way the England team for the WC was managed. On field is difficult to judge because we have performed at the same level for 15 years. The fact that the "big story" of that WC was Saints and Leeds players apparantly "not mixing well" was very dissapointing for me. Also, I think Smith reacted to that with his squad selection for this tournament. There are Saints and Leeds players who should have been in the squad, but weren't.
I was also dissapointed at the way he went to Warrington, I don't think that was in the script to start with. But I guess you can understand that to some extent.

| had high hopes when TS was announced as GB/Eng coach, obviously on the back his successes at leeds. i went to oz for world cup and saw disappointing performances from eng but doubted TS was the whole problem.
i personally dont agree with the national coach being allowed to coach a super league club as well.
and after this 4 nations, where i didnt fully expect us to reach the final, there is some hope for the future with the young guns he's brought in, if the right successor is found....though i cannot think of one!

| Well i think he's done a pretty good job because lets be honest hardly anyone thought we were going to get to the final and we looked very strong for the majority of the game (just the last quarter that was the problem hahaa!) but in this series we actually looked like a team rather than a group of individuals ... Good luck to him he's done a good job here, just hope there is someone else that can take over :S

Said last night he had to go. He really wasn't up to the job, and his selection policy left a lot to be desired.
He landed on his feet at Leeds in 2004, who IMO would have probably won the title under Powell.
Message to RFL....
[sizePLEASE PLEASE PLEASE [/size Do not give the job to Muppet MacNamara. That would be one almighty step backwards, even from Smith.

Actually, it was Leeds that landed on their feet.
I wouldn't argue about McBanana. We need Wayne Bennett. Offer him anything - just the publicity in Australia alone would be enough to boost interest in next years tournament.

| On the plus side they beat the kiwis last week and were competitive with the Aussies for an hour yesterday. He probably got a few players to play above what might have been expected of them and his overall record is no worse than his predecessors of recent years. He was also hampered by having very poor backs to select from - which has been the case since the union conveyor belt stopped.
On the downside, the world cup was a shambles off and on the field and I'd agree that selections this year reflect an inability to deal with the problems of last year. I think they also reflect the club role too - in my opinion its not a dual role position and taking the Warrington post should have terminated the England role.
Certainly not a success but no worse than others - just a different set of failings.

| Smith's more recent career has been a little bit more surprising and he seems to have taken a few different turns that he planned.
- Stated that if he left Leeds, it would probably be for an NRL post, then leaves Leeds to become national coach of England.
- After saying how much he wanted to be a national coach, then claims that he misses the day to day running of a team and takes the Warrington job.
Is he more Brian Smith than Tony Smith ?

It might just be that he tells the fans what he thinks they'll want to hear.
Or, it might be that both are true.
With the first he perhaps left Leeds sooner than he'd planned and with no opportunities offered to him in the NRL as, at the time of departure his coaching career looked to be in some decline. Then with the latter I could well believe a coach getting bored - especially one as cerebral as TS.
