He played for Sheffield against Leeds in the cup back in the mid 80s.

A young Sam Panapa also played for Sheffield. Leeds won 50-2.

Bridgeman played on the left wing with Daryl Powell as his centre. Panapa partnered ex Leeds colt Mark Gamson in the halves and a certain Gary Hetherington was the Sheffield hooker, CEO, kit man, water carrier and coach driver that day.

Vaguely remember the names Arnold Ema and Van Bellen (probably Ian rather than Gary)

That's half good right there. Arnold Hema was the Sheffield full back who kicked their solitary points for the afternoon. No Van Bellan's that afternoon though.

Other notables perhaps; Vince Farrar, Paul McDermott, Mark Campbell (another ex-Leeds colt.)

IIRC Gamson, Campbell and Powell were Hetherington's first 3 signings at his fledgeling club. I've got a feeling the '84 JP Special Trophy game was the first time we welcomed Sheffield to Headingley.

I thought '84 but those games around then are a blur. Was that the year we won it or the year after we won it?

We beat Widnes in the final the season before. In 84/5 after Sheffield Leeds beat Wigan at Headingley (John Holmes/Tony Currie), then accounted for Bramley in the quarters before going down to Hull at a snow bound Boothferry Park in the semi.
