Personally I preferred the way it was done when Jane Tomlinsons death was honoured at Headingley - a proper minutes silence followed by a round of applause - best of both worlds.

I detest the football style round of applause, which has evolved only as the result of the gormless minority being unable to behave in a civilised manner for 60 seconds.

Not at all. To stand in quiet contimplation surrounded by fans all paying their quiet respect to a true giant of the game is phenominal. To hear the flags cracking in the wind on top of the southstand and the sounds of the city in the background is fantastic. Then the wall of noise when the whistle goes to banish the silence, is just frankly amazing.
