I’m talking about guys like this -

Known as Rat and sells the big issue outside the sports café most of the time. I think that he’s ace with his Helloing everyone and random words of wisdom.

Others I can think of is that guy who used to always sing near Marks and Spencer’s (now dead) and Barnsley Bob. Can’t find the pictures but I’m sure someone will.

Feel free to share other infamous Leeds residents that you’ve just got to love!

The guy with a beard who sells the big issue outside Wilko's/the old LUFC shop. I took him for a coffee once being all charitable and all.

I do wonder if Danny ever did get that permanent memorial.

Certainly deserved one!

Going back a few years.... Stanley Breeze . A friendly old chap who had fallen on hard times and grew to like the way of life on the streets . Then there was the Big Issue bloke near Merrion Centre that sold you it , then asked for it back cos it was his last copy . Terry Fkwit around Pudsey/Stanningley (face covered in boils), and Co-Op Eric around Stanningley/Farsley (wore a grey coat and always walked looking at the floor and his hands behind his back)

Going forwards a few years ... Damo selling Big Issue outside the ticket office at HQ on match days . icon_wink.gif

He’s still around and what a Farsley Legend! My mates girlfriend once kissed him bless!

I remember talking to him a bit as a kid. Told us he had a pet Giraffe and we all believed him. These days his legendry Hello isn’t they. Just a wave.

The place won’t be the same without Eric when he goes!

I probably will be heading that way at this rate. No chance of getting a job and I keep biting the hand that feeds me by moaning about the ills of society. At least when I’m on the street I can dance like a mad man and someone might just spot me and pluck me from obscurity.

After all a lot of creative people who don’t like to conform to societies norms end up on the streets!

Eric used to sweep-up at the dairy where my old feller worked . Got a couple of stories about him .

His boss told him to sweep up . Eric asked where . Boss told him to follow the brush around .
They later found Eric 'following' his brush around 6 miles up the A62 from where he started .

One day the boss told Eric he wasn't sweeping-up good enough . Eric told boss that if boss could do it better then boss should do it .
Boss said ' I get paid for what I know , not for what I do'
Eric replied ' You can't get paid a lot then son'

True stories .

There's a portrait of Danny hanging in the LGI. It's at top of the access tunnel from the old building to the new one.

Probably going back to the 80s there was a small, fairly smartly dressed old boy (flat cap and overcoat) that used to patrol Albion Place each day. He'd greet everyone who causght his eye with " 'ow do" and then ask them for the price of a cup of tea.

Pffft!

Nothing can compare to the cowboy who used to hang around the Arndale Centre in Headingley in full "Woody from Toy Story" gear and a horse, he even had replica Colt 45's that fired blanks but was more famous for his bullwhip that he'd crack an inch from your ear until he got arrested.

Remember that one d040.gif

IN my dim and distant past IIRC Woodbine Liz standing outside the Whip Inn abd hurling abuse and threats at passers by and more recently Mad John often seen pushing random wheelie bins up Kirkstall Road

Was a bloke knocked around Meanwood / Headingley, he had bottle bottom glasses & went everywhere with a carrier bag full of crap he'd aquired throughout the day, his hands were bandaged up boxer style, he sometimes used to end up in my local, when he eventually called a cab & they asked who it was for he'd reply Jack Dempsey, Sugar Ray, Roberto Duran etc, as soon as he picked the phone up everyone was throwing their quids in for the sweep on who he was that night.

Guitar Chris, the charity dude thats forever around the Dock and I also see this homeless guy and his dog outside Stone Roses bar when I go past. Every Saturday. Never spoken to him but he seems popular with the local nuts.
