Leeds Met are putting their student fees up by 50% to cover increasing costs.What will this mean for the Carnegie cash bandwagon that bankrolls Leeds Rugby Club, Yorkshire cricket, the Challenge Cup and World Club Challenge.Is it right that students should subsidise all this, bearing in mind that the Met students tend to come from not as well off families than those at Leeds Uni.Is taking money away from education the right way to sponsor sport?

This is still being talked about, nothing has been decided as far as I'm aware.

I wasted 4 years of my life at Leeds Met; the least they can do is sponsor my beloved Rugby League to make me feel like I got something worthwhile out of them.

They've been sponsoring things for the past few years without raising their fees. I doubt now that this is proposed with the intention of it generating more sponsorship money. Im sure the hike in fees (Which most Uni's are planning/pushing for or they already have higher fees) is to ensure better facilities, better teaching and better equipment.

On your subject of background. I got Uni offers from Leeds and Leeds Met, I chose the met. Background wealth played no part in it and I suspect that is true to most, especially with the financial "Support" that is available nowadays. People who attensded whichever uni got their on merit, its unfair of you to suggest its due to their "well off" backgrounds.

In an era of redundancies being threatened across the HE sector I'd be interested to know how Leeds Met and other post-92 'universities' can justify using funds to sponsor sporting teams.

If anything Leeds Rhinos should be paying Leeds Met if they are benefitting from the fruits of the sports science research being undertaken there.

It may well be that wealth does not play a part in Universitys offering a placement, but when families have to make that choice they will take the obvious route.Students do have more access to finance these days, to take them into substantial debts.But from experience I know the extra costs involved in having a son/daughter attending university

Having worked at both for a number of years the more affluent by far attended Leeds Uni.

What made your experience so bad?

I had 40 minutes of the worse refereeing exhibition to endure watching Leeds Met.
