Like you say, it does smack of being given the choice to go on his own terms and the disciplinary case against him will quietly disappear into the long grass.

Never mind, there's still Child, Bentham, Hicks, Thaler etc to grumble about.

Allegedly got drunk and behaved inappropriately towards female colleagues on a night out in Newcastle during Magic Weekend. Sam Ansell got suspended too.

This is the third strike for Silverwood though - passed confidential information to a trade union in 2009 and was involved in an altercation sat in the stands at a Huddersfield game in 2011.

Richard Silverwood and referees in general divide opinion

I have worked with Silverwood for a number of years in an RL capacity and what ever people think he was at one point the No 1 referee in this country possible beyond at the time. Arrogance was something that was nurtured at RL by the likes of Berry, Cummings, Holdsworth and Ganson. I am not his advocate but he was very good at one stage and I fear alcohol was his nemesis

I will never convince everyone but from junior rugby to internationals it is a fact that there are normally 27 people on a pitch or field of play and only one is necessary or essential to play the game.

Perhaps if more people gave something back to rugby instead of just taking from it the game would be in a better place

As a Leeds fan and putting to one side whatever personal circumstances this leaves him in - this delights me as Silverwood has never been kind to Leeds despite the delusions of some opposition fans. A simple study of the body language of Peacock and Sinfield when dealing with him compared to, say, Thaler, Klein or Bentham shows a completely different relationship (and occasional discussions with Leeds players confirms they held him in very low regard).

Remember the 2010 World Club Game. Never forget it - because that was the most pathetic, spineless example of refereeing I've ever seen. It was pretty much the only time he was called out for it - not that he ever forgave Keith Senior or Leeds for that.

That's what always got me with Silverwood. One week he'd show you why he was regarded as one of/the best ref in the league.....but then next week he'd put in a shocker and have an awful attitude towards the players.

Yep. He was appalling in that game and not in an out of his depth or getting calls wrong way. Screwed us well and truly in that game, partly I'm sure he let his dislike of certain Leeds players cloud his judgement and partly I think he was sucking up to the Aussies to get international gigs.
