| Thought he put in another cracking display last night - I didn't see the game at Widnes, but have seen all his other performances and certainly think he's grabbed his opportunity and made the most of it. Looks like a good old fashioned ball playing 7 - something we've been crying out for.
As things stand, I'd say with the way he's playing he's putting himself above Sutcliffe in the pecking order, and it should be him partnering McGuire on form.
This doesn't mean I'm writing off Sutcliffe, but there's only realistically space for 1 of them in the 17 when all are fit. Sutcliffe would offer good versatility from the bench though, however, being a bench utility could hamper his development as a long term 6.
What are people's thoughts?

| I thought he was fantastic last night, mature beyond his years. Always has his hand up for the ball and always communicating. Sutcliffe I also thought had a fantastic game, more so in the first half. Second half he seemed a bit lost as some posters have previously mentioned.
It's going to be a difficult choice for Mac, I do however think he'll continue to choose Sutcliffe over Lilley for the time being when the squad returns to full fitness.

| Long term i see Lilley as our 1st choice 7 and he certainly warrants his selection however i still believe in terms of overall talent Sutty shades it and should retain his no6 spot when Mags is fit form & injury permitting!

That's certainly another string to his bow...
I particularly like how confident he seems to be in taking control - he gets his hands on the ball plenty and also isn't afraid to take the line on, and I think that's vital for a 7 to be a running threat as well as an organiser. He certainly doesn't wait for the game to come to him, which if I'm being really critical is something I think Sutcliffe can be guilty of at times (and so can some of our best players - Watkins for instance).

I love playing for him. I can't praise him enough, I've so much respect for him and I hope he's here for a very long time." Kevin Sinfield 29/9/12:d7dc4b20b2c2dd7b76ac6eac29d5604e_68506.jpg |

| Lilley and Sutcliffe have a combined wage of £32K according to McD's post-match interview. Puts a lot of things in perspective...

| If McGuire was back this week I think he'd stick with Sutcliffe, but you know McGuire will miss around 5/6 more so chance for that to change if Lilley keeps impressing.

Does that mean pay them more & they'll somehow be better players?

Of course not.... As an interesting ratio though the half back pairing of Thurston and Morgan will be on around 30x that amount....

Apparently, I've heard the same argument regarding the Salary Cap. If the SL cap was as high as the NRL cap we'd be just as good as them.

I think thats the key, for me Sutcliffe is the more talented player and seems to have a really good kicking game in fact, the problem is he doesn't take on the kicking duties enough and wont just grab the game by the scruff of the neck as Thurston did at the start of the second half hopefully that will come with more starts at 6
Lilley is good but still needs improvement and would benefit a lot from a lengthy loan at a championship club when possible where he can learn to control games and keep consistant for 80 mins, a few times last night he kicked a nothing kick straight to there fullback when we were in their half and should be looking to force repeat sets, this is okay for an up and comer but not a first choice 7

Are you saying that Sutcliffe kicked well last night?

Well it would go some way to achieving this if it enabled SL to attract half their best players over and brought a return of half of our stars now playing in the NRL. Oh and half their top coaches too.

| The problem with raising the cap is that the current batch of players would be the first in the queue asking for a raise. You would attract a few better Aussies, but the cap would need to be astronomical to attract really top NRL stars or - as per your avatar - RU players. The NRL cap is going through the roof and there's no way SL will compete on the basis of money.
What SL needs to do is work on getting better at all levels. To be fair we're seeing signs of better junior development - the best British threequarters at least look capable of challenging the Aussies physically for example, which wasn't the case a few years ago.
But its still not enough. Halfback is still a wasteland, and we have players with basic flaws playing their entire careers at the highest level in SL without needing to fix them.
Two examples at Leeds would be a halfback in Burrow who if he had no running game would probably be low-end championship standard as an actual halfback (he basically can't pass or kick well at all if we're honest), and Hardaker who if he was in the NRL would be dropped and sent back to the reserves until he learned to pass instead of being touted as an international full back.
