| There's an oddity that I've often wondered about but never seen until last night. Hull were camped on the giants line and a high cross field kick on the last was put in into the giants in goal area from around the 10m line. The hull player caught it on the full in goal and touched down for the try. But the oddity is that when the ball was kicked into the in goal area, during its flight it looked to pass between the posts (and over the cross bar) so technically it was actually an (unintended) drop goal. They showed it from several different angles on the replays and it looked to me each time that that was the case but the commentators never mentioned it.
Question is, if it's not intended to be a drop goal then does it not count as one? Or does the fact that it was caught on the full and touched down "override" the drop goal? Or was it just a case of none of the officials spotted that the ball had taken that path during its flight?

Was it actually do kicked, or was it punted? It's usually punted on the 5th.

It wasn't intended to be a drop goal - it was kind of a chip over into the in goal area at an angle with the intention of scoring the try but definitely looked like it went between the sticks and over the crossbar on its way. It was caught on the full and touched down by the hull player. Does the try override the drop goal? Does it not count as a drop goal if that wasn't the intention and it just happened to go between the sticks? Or am I talking complete rubbish?

| The ball has to bounce before kicking for it to be a drop goal, had it bounced it would have stood as a drop goal, but it didn't the ball was kicked directly from the hands.

| If you are needing clarification on any aspects of the rules regarding drop-goals then I would suggest you sneak over and look on the Hudds site .Keep it stealthy though

| must say i had always wondered about that seeing a lot of kicks going close to going over, didn't know about the ball having to touch the floor first for it to be classed as a drop goal

Quite. He said "thanks for the clarification". Not "thanks for muddying the waters".

| If the ball must bounce for it to be considered as a drop goal, wouldn't that be a knock on?
I seem to remember McGuire a few years ago having a drop goal crossed off for that very reason.

No, otherwise every drop goal would be given as a knock on. In RL intention is everything, if you drop the ball with intention of performing a drop kick then it's play on, if you drop the ball while intending to retain possession then it's a knock on.
That's why it's not a knock-on when players allow the ball to hit their body from a kick off for instance.
