Leeds Rhinos rookie ready to face home-town team Whitehaven
by martin morgan
Last updated at 11:32, Saturday, 23 January 2010
Leeds Rhinos boss Brian McClennan has no fears of throwing in Whitehaven-born rookie talent Jared Stewart for his first-team debut against his home-town team tomorrow (2pm).
Jared StewartThe ex-Recre scholarship kid only turned 17 on Thursday and will be given his big chance off the bench alongside another Cumbrian teenager Brad Singleton, from Barrow.
“They will be fine and will have some pretty experienced players around them,” ‘Bluey’ said.
“Willie Poching will introduce them at the right time and monitor how they are going, from a coaching point of view. Our senior players will also have an eye on them, on the field. Jared and Brad Singleton have risen up the ranks really quickly, starting at Under-16 and in to the Under-18s, and we’ll get them some experience playing in this game.”
Ex-haven prop Kyle Amor will start for the Rhinos, while Ian Kirke, a Grand Final winner with Leeds last season, will open his pre-season account following minor ankle surgery.
“To get three Cumbrian lads playing in a Rhinos team – we are pretty excited about that,” McClennan added.
“They are young but very talented and we have high opinions of them at the club. All three have great potential.
“Kyle’s improving each week, you can see it.
“He’s got the respect of all his team-mates, and you can’t ask for more than that when someone new comes in to the squad.”
Haven boss Ged Stokes is well-known to McClennan from their coaching days in New Zealand and they met up again last week at Headingley.
“He came down with the coaching staff to visit for a couple of days and it was really good,” said the Leeds coach.
“We enjoyed it and I hope they did too.
“It makes us even more excited to get up there to catch up with those lads again.”

| As for the Cumbrians, one for Tvoc, I would suggest ... I'd be very surprised if this WAS the first time we fielded three.
As expected, the team is very much the younger lads, plus those coming back from injury / rehab :
1. Tom Bush
2. Jamel Chisholm
3. Michael Coady
4. Kallum Watkins
5. James Cruickshanks
6. Jack Carvell
7. Tom Carroll
8. Luke Burgess
9. Paul McShane
10. Kyle Amor
11. Ian Kirke
12. Jay Pitts
13. Chris Clarkson
14. Luke Ambler
15. Ryan Bailey (subject to fitness test)
16. Liam Hood
17. Danny Bravo
18. Jared Stewart
19. Brad Singleton
Eastwood has been withdrawn, no-one can say if his wrist is going to be OK or not.
Does that mean he might not play next week in the opening match then ?

| Re-Eastwood he was withdrawn because he was unable to see the specialist to get the all clear on the wrist injury.
I'd be surprised to see him next week v Crusaders now maybe the Cas game.

| Is it really worth making the trip to watch that squad ? I am going to watch the Rhinos . It is advertised as a Rhinos game . Just my opinion , but surely if it is a Rhinos game there should be more first team regulars in the squad . I have seen various alledged teamsheets in the run up to this game , and there have been various numbers of first team player's names in those lists . There has been talk of some big names making their debuts , and senior players getting a run out pre-season . To name a squad like that is an insult to the intelligence of the supporters . They should have said from the start that is was an academy side they were putting on the field . Pre-season warm up game .... For my fkin engine and my wallet . 270 miles or so round trip , and £14 quid entry to a hole of a ground . Bargain ain't it .
If my hair is a mess when I wake up in the morning I might not bother going .

| I considered going when it was first announced, as I guess it is part of the deal when we signed Amor, but now it is close and the game in Wales next week (not to mention a sizeable academic workload this weekend), I've decided not to go.
