It been brought to my attention by a workmate who is running a 10k to raise funds to help save a ward that the Leeds General Infirmary,

he gave me the information to go to the site where there is a petition to object to the closure.

here's what it says

As a result of the NHS's review of pediatric heart surgery provision across the country, the Children's Heart Surgery Unit at the Yorkshire Heart Centre in Leeds is at risk.

The unit provides specialist surgery and care to children from all over Yorkshire and the Humber, Lincolnshire and North Derbyshire. If it closed, hundreds of children who require life-saving surgery each year would have to travel long distances, possibly hundreds of miles to another facility. This could put their lives in greater jeopardy.

It would also cause severe distress for the patients and their families, and would see the end of a great team of specialist surgeons and experienced nurses, who have worked so hard to provide unrivaled service and care.

We believe closing this unit would affect not only the hundreds of families who rely on it each year, but everyone in the region who believes Yorkshire should retain its essential healthcare services.

Its getting beyond a joke that wards are closed because of funding and to target a children's ward is beggars belief.

As Wakefield fans we know only to dearly the loss of two players to heart conditions and I feel that this does need addressing, there has been up to 35k registered it costs nothing to protest if you feel strongly enough.

You look well for your age then...

I signed this weeks ago when they were out with the paper forms outside Castleford Asda.

The apparent absurdity of the original poster - no need to adapt it in a comical fashion anymore.

You do know why the Childrens Heart Surgery ward is being shut down don't you ?

(and believe it or not, it's not down to Dave). Or are you just assuming the copy of Socialist Worker that you saw in the street is saying the Tories are the ones to blame for everything ?

So - be positive. If you really want the ward to stay open, then you need to partition Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust to make their cuts elsewhere. Either that or wait for a Foundation Trust to offer the same service within the region (i.e. same location , different supplier )

Highly unlikely to see anyone carrying a copy of socialist worker where I live ..... including me.

When you say 'their cuts' who provides their funding?

Its an excellent strategy to deflect blame and one that is being well practised and will continue to be so done right throughout this year and next - blame the local authority not the central funding machine that has decimated their budget.

Fact is - promises were made in April and already torn up by May last year, Dave will no doubt have his excuses ready if he was shown that poster but he probably goes to bed most nights hoping and praying that his slash and burn policies start to pay dividends within the next four years because if they don't he'll be lucky to get elected in his own constituency.

Due to the over spending and huge debit politics of the previous 10 years. No more boom and bust etc.

It's a difficult one isn't it. Putting party politics aside for a moment, its not a good situation when the debt of the country is going up at an increasing rate. Whoever was in charge now would be dealing with a very tough situation, and regardless of the promises made by any of the parties prior to the election, they would all have to make decisions that would be unpopular wiht the public. We could debate all night regarding the speed and depth of cuts required, but what is certain is that some are.

There is no easy answer to this, I'm not convinced there is even a right one, but the country generally cannot continue to rack up debt at the rate that it was. I

t's also certain that we could not continue to employ so many people in the public sector, as each one takes more from the "government pot" than they contribute, meaning that they are adding to the debt rather than reducing it. Public sector workers do a very good job in difficult circumstances (particularly at the moment), and I genuinely feel for those who are (or will be) facing redundancy, but we have to realign the size of the public sector to a more sustainable level. However if jobs are not created for the mass redundant public sector workers to go to, then all we are doing is swapping paying a salary to someone for work, to paying benefit to someone for no work, and that's not a step in the right direction. I don't see anything like enough initiatives to create the jobs, and therefore additional revenue for the government rather than additional cost, so this is looking like a very long road at the moment.

Whatever is to come, the country would do well to stick together at this time rather than descend into mass strikes and anarchy as that will only make a difficult position worse.

Agreed.

The working classes should always bend over and take it up the clacker during any crisis of capitalism.

That's their role.

So you're one of those deficit deniers are you? I suppose you don't accept that had Labour still been in power they would have been cutting at least 15 of every 18 pounds that the Coalition are planning?

You should plan your next holiday in Greece, Portugal or Ireland and see how bad it could have been.
