| was a phenomenal player for us even past his prime and after that horrific broken jaw he took off Andy Dannatt right at the start, he was the shining light of Laughton's Leeds side that had some proper class in it and would have won a few trophies were it not for That Wigan team. posting over 30 tries a season in your mid 30's... as a forward. unreal.
in my opinion he is the best ever, 86-90 untouchable.

There's I reckon at least eight quite or really good players in there (plus some not very good admittedly) but at least 10 of that 15 played their best rugby league away from Leeds. Which sums up the era.'"
i was at that game, awful day.think the upgrades made on that side for the following two seasons to that, which included Iro, Eyres, Flymo, Cummins, Howard made us a fantastic side to watch at times; when we were on it was truly a pleasure and provided some of my best ever memories of watching Leeds despite the lack of success.

| Comparing Hanley and Tomkins has got to be a joke surely?
Tomkins burst on to the scene and was good for about 3 or 4 years before thinking he was a superstar and deteriorating and being shipped out of Wigan.
Hanley is GOAT and still considered so in Australia.
Best we’ve ever produced.
Tomkins was another SL failure in Australia, couldn’t even get in the Warriors side when they were rock bottom.
Agree, not in SL top 25.
No comparison.

Never said I was comparing. Said Tomkins best I've seen in my time. Was never lucky enough to see or judge Hanley, so was asjing fit other people's memories....

| Hanley is far and away the best British player of the past 40 odd years. He took a few years to get some consistency at Bradford but when he did he was light years ahead of everyone else. To score 55 tries in a season (the first since Billy Boston) in a very average team was phenomenal. Unfortunately we were never going to hang on to him after that.
Wigan had his best years I remember him 63 tries in the 86-87 season and he was utterly peerless. His stint for Balmain in 88 was magnificent. The Aussies absolutely loved him.
By the time he came to Leeds is was slightly past his peak but he was still the best loose forward in the game over here.
The best British player I've seen. Up there with the likes of Lewis, Meninga and Johns without a doubt.

| I saw Ellery walking round the hotel at the last CC final, still looks like he could play now.
