I've never understood the need for warm weather pre season training camps, especially as the season starts in winter. It's hard
hardly the best preparation for that.

I think you answer the very reason in your post. It’s not about the start, it’s about the whole season. Preaseason is vital to a good season, you need to take advantage of it as much as possible. Only one way to guarantee that.

I guess a warm weather training camp is a decent expense. Taking a whole squad away for long enough to do some good, you must be looking at up to £2k per head?

It’s probably mentally beneficial as much as anything else. Whether it really makes a difference to the season ahead though is debatable.
