Has Hull ever moved on from the 1950's ?



I've been in the South Stand many many many times and I've never heard a trawler song. To be fair, how many Leeds fans know of a connection between Hull and trawlers ??

Definitely pre-SL era it was chanted - before or after singing "Get Your Fathers Gun..." - sometime circa late 70's or early 80's - ish.

"Sing When You're Mining" was also quite popular during the 80's Miners Strike when the mining communities were doing it really tough during Thatcher govts war against them. It was chanted loudly by southstanders particularly during the half time break in games against Castleford when their fans were walking past to change ends pitchside, as fans were allowed to do back then.

Always been classless have some southstanders and on a par with the thruppeny mob over at Hull.

Absolutely. Given, in general, the impeccably generous, welcoming and partisan nature of crowds at sports stadiums in this country and across the world, I'm surprised the South Stand hasn't been closed for encouraging such despicably anti-social behavior.

All clubs have their fair share though, would you not agree?

Mocking the dead and others associated with trades which have represented working class communities in harsh conditions and with such distinction, and whose cultural demographic roots are indelibly intertwined with rugby league, is about as low as it gets.

Indeed, and you make an interesting observation about what passed as acceptable behavior by sports fans 40 odd years ago. Not really applicable to the people who watch from the south stand today though is it?

Anyhow, a response was required to someone keen to paint southstanders in a more favourable light than they deserve.

I didn't expect anyone else on this forum to provide such a response, so I guess it was up to me all along to keep things real

Todays mob wouldn't have a clue about the trawler industry in Hull or the disasters that have cost thousands of Hull fishermen their lives. I'm guessing that's probably a good thing.
