Youngsters with "promise" are just that, they are not guaranteed to develop into top class senior players. If he'd been good enough he would have got his chance. It's a sad excuse to blame other factors, true, there are players who have not had the best of luck coming up, injuries at critical times, being at the back of the queue in a position at a club etc. However, there's more than one club in the competition and there are plenty of kids who have been shown the door to go to other clubs and really do the business.
In fact with the salary cap and the limited senior squad size clubs can run young players should actually expect to play senior rugby at a club other than the one they play academy rugby at. It's pretty clear that a junior signing for a SL club is highly unlikely to graduate to the senior side at the same club.
