Quote: ThePrinter "The ones given out to sports personalities have become quite silly for a while now. I'm more of the opinion that if they are going to award sports people it should come at the end of their careers. However success in 1 event/tournament/season and they're immediately getting honoured. It's not like you see the ones given to actors after a couple of movies or musicians after one album.
On one hand you have 5 of England's 1966 World Cup winning team who didn't receive MBE's until the year 2000. At the other end of the scale Audley Harrison got one after the 2000 Olympics, no doubt for "services to boxing" yet after then he's done more harm than good to the sport with some awful showings. Paul Collingwood received one along with the rest of the 2005 England Ashes team even though he played one test and scored a total of 17 runs in 2 innings. Beckham was awarded in 2003, the halfway point of his career.
*Yes I know Peacock has got one too. Whilst he does deserve one I don't believe he should have been recognised until he had finished playing.'"
Agreed, just like testimonials also
