To be fair, there seems to be a bit of a backlash against the AC on this. The police have had the 'evidence' for 5 months and done nothing with it, which at least suggests there's not much evidence of the apparently massive criminality suggested in the original press conference. In addition, the Cowboys have said that their involvement relates to one former player based on his time at another club (I guess the ACC suggesting that said player may have influenced other Cowboys players to do dodgy things). I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that the evidence is similarly sp at most of the other clubs named.

The policy had the evidence on Jimmy Saville for decades so does that suggest there's not much evidence of massive criminality?

The ACC is a body specifically set up to investigate large-scale criminal activities. It has 'coercive' powers when setting up interviews with interested parties (i.e. refusal to attend an interview/answer questions can result in significant civil penalties). It was tasked with investigating drugs and corruption in major sports in Australia, which it did, and then as per its remit it handed the evidence to the police, as its their responsibility to prepare any resulting cases. After 5 months reviewing the ACC evidence, the police have no plans to charge anybody withn any offence.

That's hardly the same as the Saville case.

I'm not saying there are no cases of drug abuse in the NRL, simply that the press conference suggested major criminality across all the major sporting codes, when in fact it now appears that several of the SIX NRL clubs named have been implicated by virtue of association with individual players - past players at that, and in the case of NQ, a single player who may have done something whilst at another club.

Far from uncovering mass, systemic drug abuse (which may in fact be happening), the ACC seems to have identified a number of individual players and possibly teams involved in dodgy goings on. Given that the (entirely intended) consequences of the press conference were to make it seem that the whole of professional sport in Australia was dirty, the whole thing is turning into a bit of a damp squib.

Should add the chief cop in Victoria has now said that there is no evidence in the ACC report that would support any criminal prosecution, or that would even further any existing investigations.
