Quote: Superted "Pre-back injury, Webb would have had a better chance of making the tackle, but he would still have made the same decision on pointing his cover defenders to the support runners and offering Chase the outside - I'd still say that the likelihood would have been a try still (Chase is afterall on of the best runners in superleague).

That was my point, Webb made the correct call on how to deal with the threat, he simply didnt have the pace having given Chase the only option to go to the corner to catch him. Rather than berate Webb, to be honest I think you've just gotta give credit to Chase.'"

I think that Webby has become very indecisive on defence and this is not the first time he has been exposed.
Remember when Whiting broke away in the QF ( when he had no-one in support ) and Webb just backed away and eventually fell on his backside ?

Although Danny McGuire saved Webb's blushes with a cover tackle, Hull scored off the next play.

Webb seems incapable of taking the initiative when facing an oncoming player and a clever footballer such as Chase will take full advantage.

Webb probably could have taken Chase out, but Clarkson's poor miss allowed the whole thing to unfold. Even if Webb had got Chase, we'd have been in defence on our own line. If Clarkson had made the tackle we'd have been defending 70M out.

Slightly OT, I know everyone's creaming about Charnley, but am I the only one who thought his attempt to beat Wellens after making a long break was, well, a bit naff? He had acres of space in which to commit Wellens, and yet only swerved a little way too close to him. Wellens is a sound defender, but has nowhere near the speed of Webb. IMO Charnley could and should have scored. Plenty of class wingers I've seen would have been in under the sticks from that position.

I did mention the moving of BJB to full back and did see the way he did not round McGoldrick, but I also saw him take a few high balls in our 20 and make incisive runs, beating numerous men on the way, getting us on the front foot early in a set. Webb has failed to do this regularly and I feel BJB has the pace to do this regularly.
As for the (none) tackle on Chase, I watched it again last night and still feel he had to implement a tackle. Yes Clarkson left the hole, but full back is an important defensive position, where one up tackles have to be made combined with good decision making. Webb did not, in my opinion, make the correct decision.
I'd rather have another chance defending my line than be under posts waiting for a kick to come.

Quote: Seth "The criticism for Webb on the chase try is very harsh. Chris clarksons late retreat from the ruck was exposed by chase leading to a poor effort from clarkson. Webb pointed to the covering defence to pick up the support, had he committed straight away the 2v1 would have left the cover short so he tried to delay chase decision making though didn't have the legs peddling back on a guy at the other end of his career.'"

Spot on, and we have to give credit to Rangi Chase for an excellent step, and scoring one of the best tries of the competition.

That's spot on. There is a bracket of time where the support runner is covered and Webb could easily make the tackle, but he held off. He won't commit to any tackles at all. A neck/back injury isn't an excuse, it's a reason and should be taken in to consideration at contract renewal stage.

For me the blame lies with Clarkson for the Chase try, it was a shocking attempt, I can't make my mind up abouth Clarkson, I think he's got potential but he doesn't really hit hard in defense or attack and he seems to have very average hands. Hopefully this will improve as he develops and fills out, but at the moment I'm not sure he should be starting LF for Leeds. Webb has been inconsistant at times this year but he has also been our most creative player at times too, he has an extra dimention to his play that BJB currently doesn't have playing FB.
