The only problem with the 'first reserve' scenario is that its a bit of a promise to nothing really. I do agree with the wish that players would take a long-term view, but I can fully understand it if the likes of Ratu and Broughton (who lets not forget has never played first team for Leeds) decide to try to kick on straight away elsewhere. In Broughton's case he's played for Hull and done OK, and probably wants first team ASAP.

I'd have much rather Leeds had said thanks for the memories Scott and let one of Broughton/Jones-Bishop/Watkins integrate into the first team and kept within the spirit of the RFL's overseas trained limit.

Tell me, what's the difference between Watkins and Broughton? You weren't willing for Watkins to learn on the job in the centres and wanting someone signed.

From what I've heard he's doing well with his studies and has the option to have a longer and higher income outside of sport. I believe he's frustrated with doing two jobs at once, having to dash back for training - but the fact he does so show's he has a lot of determination for Leeds and that he still wants that chance.
