This is terribly sad news. He was without doubt my boyhood hero growing up and watching Leeds standing in the old Paddock in the 1970s.

John was a majestic player, one of the very greatest to have graced the game of rugby league. Let's hope there is a lasting memorial to him.

He won you the 1978 Challenge Cup Final with his passing in the second half.

At one time I think he held the record for most points by a GB player in an international (against NZ in 1972 World Cup).

As a youngster I use to think he looked like John Alderton off Please Sir.

Rest in peace John. Was not privelleged enough to see you play in the flesh, just slightly before my time, but your deeds and actions will allways be remebered by those who did get to see you play in the blue and amber and im sure the whole of the rugby league family will mourn you for the great that you were and still are.
