Metres alone isn't a good indication, as a player could take the ball up hundreds of times to make the metres but they might not be effective metres.
Carries alone isn't a good indication. If a player is running the ball in hundreds of times but not making enough metres forward the team would be better served giving the ball to someone else.
Metres per carry is a combination of the two.
Now, James Graham will lose out slightly in the metres per carry stat, simply because he is called on to do so much work. St Helens will be fully aware of this, and they will accept this because of his value to the team. But you don't just deride the MPC stat because it works out badly for Graham.
Stats are good. They give good indications of how players perform. But you need to look at ALL the stats together.
