surely the disciplinary panel must realised that players defending their own line are 100% switched on to the attacking team - Tansey wouldn't have had time to think...

He's not even looking at Roby, he's watching the play and nudges him out the way when he backs into him, entirely Roby's fault - to say he used "unnecessary force" wouldn't have even crossed him mind, he just wanted/needed to get accros to the attackers

The difference between a McIlorum and a Tansey incident is that the broken nose issue has to take into consideration that you are aiming to tackle legally and may do it wrong. They decide on intent or accident though it's still clearly illegal.
Pushing a ref is never an accident. It is not part of the game so no accident option available.
I haven't seen it but an athlete like Tansey can easily move quicker than a ref. Should have moved.

Players shouldn't push referees, but that being the case, referees really need to not get in the way when players are trying to defend their try line. 3 matches seems silly, given a lack of malice, but that's what will happen.
If Tansey is getting a ban and a telling off, Silverwood needs to receive a letter reading:
