Weren't Wigan something like £222k over the limit that year ?

From what I can see it's because Cas deferred the [ipayment[/i of the wages, Wigan wanted to defer when the wages were actually accrued. It's like the difference between not being able to afford your tax bill and negotiating a repayment plan, or fiddling your tax returns.

Wigan didn't pay out more than the salary cap allowed in 2006 because they deferred wages. As a result they were able to sign players and still remain within the cap so ended up with a stronger squad. By deferring wages in 2009 Cas got to keep certain players in their squad who they obviously could not afford due to other financial problems. So deferring wages was a mechanism to have a stronger squad. In both cases neither club broke the salary cap. The differences in practicalities are moot since both are manipulations to effectively bolster squad strength.

(Whoever posted Wigan were at a cap level of £2.25m is getting mixed up about the time when the flat rate cap first came in at £1.8m (in 2004 I think). Wigan had existing contracts that meant the season after, that was going to be the wage bill).

Wigan cheated what? When the rugby league nearly went bust in 1995 before the superleague deal was signed up, who borrowed the rugby league £4m ? Looks like Ryan may pick up a 1 match ban for pushing the referee on Friday night whilst attempting to make a tackle. Must say that Mr Roby had a shocker with the whistle.
