We (SWAG/Residents 4 Newmarket/Supporters Trust) learned of the RW letter before it went on the planning portal, as it was an appendix of Barton Willmore's evidence. We actually even heard about this prior to learning that Tesco had pulled out of negotiations with Opus for WR. We discussed the letter at length and we all agreed that, even though we were unhappy & disappointed with RW actions, it was not appropriate to bring this to anyone's attention at this time because it served no positive purpose to do so and our sole aim is to get Newmarket through the PI, & not criticise RW unless the letter was used 'against' Newmarket.

We did think that it might come up and we said that if it did, we would have no choice but to comment & of course condemn RW's actions (we were all very clear that we condemn RW only, as we did not know whether he had sought the opinion of the Cas board or not prior to writing the letter). It seems that we gave much more thought to RW's letter than he seemed to do before writing & sending it... which is a genuine shame!

So, bigalf, you clearly knew about it before the news came 'out' in the PI, I could tell from a couple of cryptic posts... so why didn't you say anything? I suspect you thought about it too and realised no good would come of bringing this to Cas fans attention prior to the PI, just like we did... seems all our integrities remain intact!!!

When I learned that Tesco had pulled out of negotiations with Opus for WR, again, I thought carefully about it, but only for a short time! I quickly knew that, in actual fact, it was none of my bloody business and that it seemed to have (at that time!) zero bearing on the Newmarket PI. As such, and also knowing that someone would find out sooner or later and post the news anyway, that this was best kept to myself and it was not until the rumours started to break and people contacted me, to see if I had heard, that I spoke to anyone about it. The only person I discussed WR with was you, and that was a couple of weeks prior and, as you know, this was about flooding issues and the rumour that negotiations between Opus & Tesco might be breaking down because of this.

So, there you go! I suspect that this post will get me accused of lots of things both here and on Cas forum, and I think the only thing I have not been accused of, mind only by a small minority of posters, is assassinating Princess Di! I would like to state for the record I was actually throwing a party at the time and as such there were lots of witnesses, albeit generally very drunk ones, who can vouch for my whereabouts... & it was not Paris!

Think you're probably going to have to explain the flooding issues Wheldon Road has after that and why it is that Tesco have pulled out.

IA has mentioned it so if he wants to elaborate its up to him. Its not for me to say, some people claim to know better so i'll wait for them to find it out themselves and i'll stay out of it from now on. In fact i'd say there is only a 1 in 100 chance of me saying anymore.....

I came back to edit my post in light of a PM and polite request from Fully that I may have misunderstood the nature and tone of his PM's and was therefore more than happy to do so, but it appears that a mod has done this for him already.

"When I learned that Tesco had pulled out of negotiations with Opus for WR, again, I thought carefully about it, but only for a short time!"

Quick question then IA - Why (in this mornings P & C Express) have Tesco announced their objection to the E House development? Are they looking at the 3rd site or is Wheldon Road back in favour for them?

Thats what I was thinking Fully.

Interesting reading in this morning's Cas & Ponte. Some good letters worth a look at. One in particular that points out how much EH would be unpopular to the Cas public if they were to be successful and it cost Tigers a place in SL.

I understand that they are looking at two other site options in Castleford that they feel are going to be more cost effective to develop and hence the reason they are currently no longer looking at WR. The issue with Wheldon Road for them was the 1 in 100 year flood levels and their stipulation that a store on stilts would be their preferred option to make this site work because of the insurance risk that supermarkets like to carry to reduce their premiums. It is only a low flood risk, but when you have other site options in the area that you think are going to be cheaper to bring to fruition, then that would be their preferred option. Tesco have massively overspent on their new store development budgets for the last two years and as they look to maintain their shareholder dividends, by maintaining their overall profitability against increasing energy costs, they are looking to reduce store development costs.

It is possible that Tesco may find other issues with the other site options and return to WR, but this looks unlikely at the moment.

Tesco are objecting to EH because they don't want the site, and to be fair, neither does anyone else, so they would like to remove a potential obstacle blocking any other site that they might like to develop in the future.

I'll be surprised if Cas or Wakefield get their stadiums built, the way this country is going id be surprised to see anything built in the near future? I mean this government are knocking back new schools and hospitals so can't see them letting local councils spend millions on new stadiums, I believe we at Salford are very very lucky to have a new stadium to go into this year and had everything passed and build started before the condems came in to power, because if it were a year later I don't think we'd even have a stadium under construction right now.

I know it sounds negative but this is the way the country is going at the moment.

But neither are being paid for by the Council. They are merely offering both clubs land to the value of 2m to secure borrowing against

Its getting rather frustrating the amount of neutral fans who think we are getting the council to build the stadiums isnt it?
