| Quote: Georgie Best on a Bloomer "Not Headingley, it was down the lane. I looked it up on youtube, and surprisingly it's not there. I know the game was televised because I seem to remember Jonathan Davies saying that he "should've been sent off for that." I also remember the atmosphere just after that incident was so heavy on the pitch you could have cut it with a knife. I was expecting war to break out.
We'd beaten Leeds at Leeds (last minute of the game, Andy Schick scoring a try off the last kick by a certain Mr. Vowles) and Bradford at home (I think Stevie McNamara missed an easy kick that day, I remember it being really windy and it may have been Viva Brad holding the ball for (Maloneys?) place kicks) so we were up for a decent cup run, only to be taken out by Sheffield. Senior got a ban and it ended so he could appear in the final (which they went on to win!)
Edit... weren't all of those games on the box? Has anyone got them on video? I'd quite like to see them again'"
It's all coming back now!! Yes, at the time my Mrs worked at Hicksons with Keith Seniors best mates mum, (Nora Crowther mother of Sheffields Matt Crowther), and after the game she kept going on about how Keith was such a lovely lad and it was so out of character. But I remember B J Mather dropping like a stone, all 6'7" or so of him, and I remember thinking he isn't half as much sweetness and light as you think, Nora!!
Our thug of the time was Lee Harland, if I remember rightly. He was always good for a dust up aswell.

I'm pretty sure he broke Mathers jaw and he reached over Connolly's shoulder to land the punch. To be fair to Connolly he didn't have a clue who'd thrown the punch just that someone in a Sheffield shirt had! It was the fault of the other officials who failed to tell the ref who had thrown it. Had it happened under the current rules the video ref would have informed him of the culprit and he'd no doubt have been sent off - we'd have probably gone on to win the game thus preventing Sheffields and John Kear's day in the sun at Wembley...

| No,what's the advantages of signing a 35 yr old who is recovering from a career threatening injury, and I say recovering because on his twitter he has said it isn't going as well as he would like, way too much of a risk,if Wakefield want him, great,he has been a great player in his day,but noboby knows if he is going to really recover from this injury, steer well clear,we have been here before.

| Yes over the Wheldon Road stand. Never forgiven him for that punch on BJ mather in cup at cas, he should have been sent off, but went on to score 2 tries, they won the cup that year. Memories live long.
