| I think that the reactions here are a bit harsh really. I didn't see a lack of effort but what I did see was a side that was simply outclassed by much better opposition.
Wigan knew that they had the measure of us and that allowed them to play a relaxed and confident brand of rugby and we were often just chasing shadows. Sure it wasn't our best performance but I don't think that there was much we could have done against them today personally.
They are a much stronger, faster and more skillful side and sometimes in sport you just have to hold your hands up, say well done to the opposition and look towards how we can improve. Sadly, until we get a stadium, bigger crowds and more money we will never really be able to compete with the top sides.
We did have quite a few players out today who would have normally played and we certainly missed Arundel who has been good for us the past few weeks.

Did you see the performance against Catalans last week? I'd swear that was a different team out there today (and against Bradford) if I didn't know better.

| To be honest i was shocked at the lack of fight in your side yesterday. I think you need some mongrel in your pack and quick.

But last week we didn't try to take a larger pack on down the middle of the park! I really wish we would realise that at the moment we really have no front rowers to take the ball in. We are amuch better side when throwing the ball out wide!

27588.gif "Games as big as a grand finals define individuals and clubs. Remember we are only renting these shirts, I had my time in Pat Richards shirt. Ellery and Faz had there time in Sean's, Hampo and Radders in Sam's. You have to make a mark in these shirts that's still there the day you hand it over to someone else. So be aware for 80 minutes you are not only playing but also writing history and creating a legacy. How many people get to actually write history, not many. A big stage demands big players, be inspired. You play for Wigan, now go do it. Good luck." - Martin Offiah, 2010.:27588.gif |

| At times, Sam had a gap of about 2 metres to exploit. You can't give a player of his class that much time and space or he'll kill you all game as he seemed to do yesterday. I thought Chase did his best and showed some decent touches but with a beaten pack its hard for a halfback to have a true influence on the game. Richard Owen also looked lively and again the same point applies. You have the makings of top 8 side but you need to improve in the forwards if you are gonna make it. Great banter with some of the locals before the game by the way, had a really good day and was made very welcome. Your fans are a credit to your club (minus the one numpty near the end)

Luckily there's 3 props to come back from injury yet (Huby, Millington, Jackson).

| I think there is some perspective needed - we are neither going to finish top or bottom, so lets take something of a view of the events of the last week and be a little bit balanced. Secondly, three of our first 5 props are out, Wigan play fast and dominant in the middle for the first several tackles of every set.
Not that this excuses a poor effort and poor organisation - I do think that when other team's are in possession they have more players on the move purposefully creating doubt.... Generally speaking a numbered up defence will work against us with a press in or a press out to cover an over or an under line - so we don't create a lot of doubt in the opposition defense in our 'standard' sets - when we get to our red sets in the oppo 20 and get a half back on the ball - then we have some variety, but in our own half, it is a bit one dimensional.
Friday; similar defeat or we win, nothing between. Expect Hills to give us 14 start and we will either be easy inside that or will need double.

The only downside is Huby is 6? weeks away and Jackson is out for another 3 months. I hope we use Millington for Friday. Why wasnt Walker played? No disrespect to Nash but he hasnt shown me much in the games so far to be picked ahead of Walker.

| Yeah, agree with that as well - Whacker in and maybe Millington for a debut.... If they are right, I wouldn't waste them on Friday ahead of a few weeks.
With the Leeds 4 props, I think we will need some tackling beef - could be one for Hudson off the bench as well at 13, 9 is now sorted.

| Yeah we could have done with Hudson yesterday for his tackling and experience. Time to change it around a bit. I would drop Youngquest to the 20s, he clearly wasnt ready yesterday. Holmes and Mitchell have done well so far but have played pretty much 80 mins every week. Thats why i would bring in Hudson.

| McGoldrick will be ripped to shreds against Leeds so he needs dropping, stick Thompson & Grehan in the centres with Dixon & Griffin on the wings.

I know what you mean but I genuinely didn't see a lack of effort. What I saw was a team which was too light in the forwards (due to injuries), being dominated by a strong forward pack. Their backs had free reign, where as ours were pressurised on every occasion and didn't have chance to play. You could put Sam Tomkins in our side yesterday and he wouldn't have been able to do anything.
When we did well last season it was based on great forward play with Huby being arguably the best prop in the league at the time (along side James Graham). When we get him and the likes of Jackson and Millington on the pitch it will be a different story and Emmitt and Walker will fit in well with them to make a strong forward pack. I must admit, I'm surprised Walker wasn't played yesterday as he's impressed me when he has played.

Made his 1st team debut against Wigan coming on with about 20 mins left. Looked enthusiastic in defence and seemed to have a decent tackling technique which is probably taken for granted in Australia but sadly not in this country! Didn't have much chance to show anything with the ball.
Long term would see him fitting into the backline ahead of McGoldrick.
