| I know this has been done to death. However, I feel embarrased to be a Cas fan reading rlthisrl
Fair enough it is only one side and Basil/The Club must have had some reason but to not even explain it to the player is disgraceful
Was Basil at Wigan when Mathers went there? did something go on?
If it did they could have at least given him time to prove them wrong rather than making him an outcast straight away

You don't ostracise someone just because they don't play well. Even if there's a good reason for it the player and his team mates deserve an explanation. I'm not a fan of Mathers, but he went ok for you last year when I saw him - this smacks of vindictiveness, which is not a nice trait in anybody, least of all a manager. If Mathers did have good friends in the Cas team it could affect their attitude to Millward, and any manager worth his salt will know that teams work best when they work together, and not because they're 'scared' of a bully boy manager.

I think i agree with that.
If this was in any other work place the union would be brought in, it would be defimation.
If mathers was the innocent party and had done nothing wrong then millard had no right to ostresized him from his job.
Maybe ALL the truth is not out there yet.
2 sides to every story.

No, Mathers confirmed he's never met Millward before he arrived at Cas.

| It's difficult to imagine that Mathers would have been so open about the situation if there wasn't some truth in it; he obviously feels pretty hard done by.
Having said that, I'm not a terrific fan of these disputes being played out in the media; if he wants to take action against Cas for constructive dismissal, perhaps he should have a word with Comrade Wilkin?

This is the odd part for me.
Fair enough if they had worked together at Wigan and didn't get on, but if they have never met and Basil has only seen his performances for us, how can he judge him as a player and a person.
I honestly like his attitude to fitness and on the pitch he is a very good organiser. He had some very good games for us last year, a couple of bad but quite a lot of the time this was the result of inept defending from the rest of the team which left him on his own at the back

| It is a sad state of affairs is all this.
Thing is Mathers has a column in the 40-20 magazine so if he has a grievance with the club he could air his views there as well.
Could Mathers involve the players union in this?. This is up there with the Tony Martin fiasco a few seasons back

| Not bothered about this - I no more believe the entirity of Mather's view than I would Basil's.
Most of this is feelings and people are allowed to have theirs and if he felt hurt he has a right to express it. Personally anyone who is considered surplus is going to be sore, so we should expect a reaction - the long term moral high ground only comes from proving that our squad is better this year than last - if we do that over the season then as far as I am concerned, Basil is in the clear.
Mathers got a lot of strife last year for being average at best; (not my view, other peoples if you check back the forum) so we can't have it all ways Cas Fans, we either trust and invest in Owen and the youth and get them on the pitch at the expense of more established names, or we dont. As for how it was handled, dont be so naive to think that Mathers view and Tigers view wouldn't differ wildly?!

| I have a bad feeling about this for Cas.
I can see this being brought up by angry Cas fans later on in the season or next season as "the first example of Millward ruining things".
Scully's autobiography said some revealing things about Millward, that despite their success he only had about half the dressing room on his side. Scully had mentioned to him several times that he didn't like the way Millward bullied younger players but nothing was done about it.
The Cas tradition has usually been hard work and low ego and guys like Stuart Raper and Terry Matterson built that culture but with Millward it is more a case of Millward the media personality creating drama and cultivating his own image. Yes he won a lot of trophies with Saints riding on the back of a world class team but at Wigan he was massively exposed and took the club backwards.
A lot of Cas fans will give him a chance early on which is fair enough but I predict before the end of this season and certainly before the end of next season there will be a large Millward Out movement amongst Cas fans and anger at the disruption he is causing. Behaviour like this with Mathers is not out of character with Millward and he just does not fit Cas IMO.

I think there was certainly more to it that that, as other said, there are two sides to every story, there were rumours last year of him feigning injury after being dropped through poor form, if these rumours were true no coach would want him near his team.

| As people have said, there are two sides to every story and almost certainly Millward is going to say things differently.
Regarding IM, many of the Cas fans that have been down to the events to meet him have been fairly satisfied with what he has had to say and the change of professionalism in the club in terms of training, health etc has been a considerable improvement. Therefore, he's made a good start. The players always talk positively about training and about him as well.
Some people just don't get on; I don't believe this is the case with Mathers. Just think that he wasn't first choice full-back and that's why Wakefield came sniffing.

Good old Fully, RW's Minister of Information, putting a relentlessly positive spin on everything.
Do you not think that RM's own tweets about his situation at Cas might have had something to do with it? He was very public about being told not to train with his mates and tweeted quite openly for a couple of weeks about his increasingly difficult situation. I don't approve of it particularly, but it was quite revealing.
I was stood near Millward when Mathers scored one past your lot by the way - he had a face like a blistered pi55pot; wish I could have got a picture.
