Lets be honest, most ball that touched a hand and hits the ground is usually 99.9% of the time call as a knock on.
It does bug me does that, a knock on used to be when the ball came off a player and WENT FORWARD.....not sideways or backwards but forward.
So for consistancy that should have been a knock on as it went sideways, depends imo on the mood of the ref on the day
