Yes Wakefield has always been in Yorkshire which would include the original West Riding and the current West Yorkshire, not too hard to understand.

You know someone asks you where you are from and you say Wakefield or Halifax in YORKSHIRE or West Yorkshire.

Likewise in 2013 if asked would the person say they were from Sheffield in the West Riding of Yorkshire or would they may say Sheffield, YORKSHIRE or South Yorkshire.
No one would mention in normal day to day living the West Riding.
Is a big explanation really neccessary, it's like pulling teeth.

Cumbria is just a name and not a place.

Look on any map for the north west above Lancashire and tell me what it says in big letters, Cumbria the place or County.

Strange how my sat nav can take me to anywhere in Cumbria but it's not a place and I shouldn't believe it

Barrow is in Cumbria and not Lancashire FACT and nothing you can say or do can change it.

I know where Calderdale is and Barrow and Leigh.

Course when I was a young lad I realised things change.

Leigh won the Challenge Cup in 1971 as they did in 1921 and will do again in 2021.

I never mentioned Calderdale and neither agree or disagree with the name, truth is I never give it a thought.

Having done so for a moment or two now, I can see why it was chosen for the area with it having the river Calder running through it.

It is consistent with other areas similarly named, Airedale, Nidderdale etc.

Out of interest what would you have called the area as an alternative?
Does it upset you in some way.?

As to people from outside the West Riding knowing of it's existence I can't give an accurate answer as I am not aware of a survey being undertaken on the subject.

I suppose it would depend on number of factures, such as if they had ever visited the place,worked in the place, have relatives there, ever seen it on the news etc.

In that sense it will be no different from a thousand other places that are unknown outside of their immediate locality.
If I needed to find out where it was I would look on a map or do a google.

Why is the name "Calderdale" obnoxious? Anyway I just rang my Uncle Titus A'Ducks in Nashville Tennessee and asked him if he knew where Calderdale was and he said "yes"
