I never mentioned Calderdale and neither agree or disagree with the name, truth is I never give it a thought.
Having done so for a moment or two now, I can see why it was chosen for the area with it having the river Calder running through it.
It is consistent with other areas similarly named, Airedale, Nidderdale etc.
Out of interest what would you have called the area as an alternative?
Does it upset you in some way.?
I'm just really glad it didn't have the river Griff flowing through.
"Griffdale",Ahhhg.
I would have to strongly object to that.
As to people from outside the West Riding knowing of it's existence I can't give an accurate answer as I am not aware of a survey being undertaken on the subject.
I suppose it would depend on number of factures, such as if they had ever visited the place, worked in the place, have relatives there, ever seen it on the news etc.
In that sense it will be no different from a thousand other places that are unknown outside of their immediate locality.
If I needed to find out where it was I would look on a map or do a google.
Wiki says.Calderdale." The Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale is a metropolitan borough of West Yorkshire, England, through which the upper part of the River Calder flows, and from which it takes its name."
If I needed to find out where Barrow is.
Wiki says. "Barrow-in-Furness, (/ˈbæroʊ ɪn ˈfɜrnəs/; commonly known as Barrow) is a large industrial town and seaport in the county of Cumbria, England."
Easy really and quite clear.
