RFL official in suite was stood on the touchline at widnes tonight and didn't move an inch during the whole match until the end when he opened a file, couldn't have been assessing referees performance surely being in open view.

Same happened with us on Friday night. Think it was an old TJ who was stood near the Leigh bench, then after the game I heard one of the back room staff shouting for the "commissioner".

I remember him reffing us in the Pennine league, forget his name but could be Hewitt from Oldham/Rochdale area.
He was indeed the match commissioner but it was listed as John Holdsworth earlier in the week. They have to stand by the dugout area nowadays officially and NO they don't "assess" the ref's performance as such, their role has altered over recent seasons. My old man was MC at Cas last week when some of their charming speccies threww bottles & beer etc at the ref, t/j's & Catalans players before demonstrating after the game, but I haven't spoken to our Jim about the [iincidents" that day ![/i

If you notice, some fixtures now have a touch judge coach or mentor in attendance at first grade matches, it's getting ridiculous.

More likely a baby sitter, guy we had on sat looked about 12! Needed a lift home @ least!

I know this isn't really much to do with the conversation, but how much power does the 4th official have? Is he the same as the match commissioner and sat in the stand? And if he has a better vantage point then why isn't he miked up to the guy in the middle?
