Better to get rid now than leave it late on, Neil Kelly was at the ground on Friday night and we could be sounding him out. Other than that Ellery Hanley has also been mentioned.
Nice guy is Steve but we need to be dominating with the side that we have.

| I can see Ellery taking over there now, which would be a wise decision I think, he did well at Doncaster and with a good full time squad he could do very well. Which would be good as it would make the competition at the top much more tighter than it would have been with McCormack.
Also, there is a correlation that he has been sacked less than 24 hours after Ellery was knocked out of Dancing on Ice. We'll see . . .

I wouldnt get that carried away. Your team on paper isnt really that good that it will be walking the league.
Keep your hands off the best coach in the division and us Halifax fans will be happy.

Shame being a nice guy doesnt win you games, otherwise i'd be putting a ton on Celtic to win the SL.
Steve McCormack has never really impressed me as a coach, He's always had good resources to play with and made plenty of finals, but has he actually won 1?
Wonder where he'll end up, Like Steve McCurrie said to me, he'll have burned a few bridges after turning his back on Barrow at the last minute to turn around and go to Hull KR as an assistant only to leave a few weeks later to go back to Widnes

| Seems a strange time to sack someone. You either do it before the season starts so the new coach can bring his own players in or give him time to turn it around?
Saying that am not really fussed..

| I am a little concerned now though. Despite everyone backing them to, I never thought Widnes would walk the league with McCormack in charge. Now they might get a decent coach!

| If they get Ellery... He made no secrets of the fact he was at Donny for the money they were paying him, and no doubt would go to Widnes for the same reasons.
If the coach is only there for the money what example does that set to the players, surely it could unsettle the camp and damage team spirit, something which could be damaging in the long run.
Who else is availible? Steve Deakin, Tony Rea, Paul Cullen, Dave Woods?

| Deakin, Cullen and Rea have all applied for the French job, so one of them should be rulled out. I cannot really see Rea going there as he has a good job in NZ, and maybe not Cullen, but he is out of work and could do with proving himself again. Is Steve Deakin really good enough for them?
That leaves Dave Woods, who made it clear on Radio Leeds that he was on the look out for another job. He would probably do OK, but why did he leave Gateshead? Is he somebody who a top Championship club would go for?
I can only see Ellery Hanley going to this job to be honest, unless they stick with Stankevich for a while.

Did the Job for Cas a few years back, though doesn't mince his words which I seem to remember caused a few problems at Cas.

Yes, he did do the job with both Cas and Gateshead. But I do feel in this case there is probably better options available, English coaches too!

| Jon Sharp is on a cushy job at Hull, can't see him leaving.
Hanley would be completely the wrong man for the Widnes job. O'Connor has made it crystal he wants people at the club who are passionate to take Widnes back to SL and the only passion Hanley has is his wallet. Given Widnes' recent history, this wouldn't be the greatest of employments.
Woods would be a good choice although you have got to wonder what went on at Cas and Gateshead to make them part company after championship seasons.
We should be encouraging young British coaches into the game and I think it would be very refreshing if Stankevitch got the job permanantly.

| The good thing for Widnes is there is no rush to get immediate success so to speak-They have 3 years to win something. No knee jerk reactions needed though it is a bit strange timing wise. Stanky deserves the chance to prove his worth for this season. IF that does not work then Widnes can look properly over the Off season for a candidate and I am sure thats what they will do. The Club needs stability at this time and the players know Stanky.

| i can actually see that ellery hanley rumour happening.
always thought mcormack was a small time manager at ambitious clubs.
he never really had the luck to get teams to super league.
ellery hanley i think will be a good manager at widnes.

I can't work Ellery Hanley out as he must be a good coach like he was a good player but he seems to always have 'problems' which means he ends up leaving clubs on not too good a terms.
There must be something, does he think he is better than he is and bigger than the club or is it that he gets bored?
My guess is a bit of both, anybody had close experience of the guy as a coach?

i can see why this would be a favourate candidate for widnes though he is going to have a lot a to work with.
there is not much chance at the minute of getting a super league job so why not go to a club who will be one of the clubs that will be favourate for a franchise in 3 years.
give him some managerial experiance before he manages in super leaugue i would say it would be a perfect opportunity for him.
