They've always tried to get high up in the stands. Did so when the East Stand was accessable (spell) as they can presumably see more of the game going on.

Quite a few coaches prefer an elevated poisition rather than on the touchline. Brian Noble, John Kear, Tony Smith, Paul Cullen to name but a few.
