Storm were the first NRL club to use a leadership group, but they pinched the idea off Sydney Swans AFL (who probably pinched it off some other sport - it's usually those NFL boys that originate most of the ideas).

Storm went down that path as Robbie Kearns retired and Cameron Smith wasn't quite ready for the role of captaincy by himself. He was a bit laid back when it came to training.

So we had a rotating captaincy on a week by week basis (2005 I think). In 2006 Cameron became sole captain, but the leadership group remains, it's normally other members of the leadership group (in particular Cooper Cronk) that do the majority of the on field talking.

Overall it's worked well. I can't recall any occassions when there's been confusion over who's doing what (except from the Ref's - who's the captain), it seems more to me a way of recognising the natural roles the players take on the field. I guess a bit like being promoted to a senior position within the team.

The way it sounds is different players have different roles ie - talking to ref, calling plays, organising the team etc. Whether they stick to those roles or chop and change remains to been seen although I get where you're coming from.
