| LOL - Francis Maude on TV this morning trying to force down the estimates of the cost of the funeral by explaining that you shouldn't factor in the cost of the 700 armed forces lining the route because "they are already on the payroll" and we'd have to pay their wages whether they stood there or not.
Yes Francis, because thats how accountancy works isn't it, "We shouldn't include the cost of these lathes and this factory because we'd have to pay for them even if we weren't producing all of these parts" - I look forward to all of the Premier League football clubs using the same theory when they refuse to pay their huge policing bills...

4000 rozzers policing the funeral rather suggests an ideal opportunity for criminals elsewhere too

I hope my brother in law and his dog were rostered off today, as a Met dog officer he'll certainly be called in at overtime ( and pretty generous it is too).

| Quote SaintsFan="SaintsFan"'Facts surrounding' does not appear to be a trendy consideration on this thread, given that the 'facts surrounding' the closure of pits under Margaret Thatcher included such examples as her original intention to close only 20 loss making mines, Arthur Scargill taking the miners out on illegal strikes, moving monies abroad, etc, etc. Those are examples of facts but they do not seem to be taken into consideration when discussing this topic so why should I take any 'facts surrounding' the closure of mines under Wilson into consideration?'"
What an idiotic and quite frankly childish stance to stance to take. Whatever you believe happened with Scargill doesn't alter what happened under Wilson and why it happened. All you did, which you know you did, was pluck numbers off the Internet without bothering to look into it any further. It's no way to conduct a debate and just makes you look stupid. It's been pointed out in detail what the Wilson governments strategy was regarding the mining industry in this country and the difference between that and what Thatcher did is poles apart.

As I have pointed out though, a country has to invest in its fuel extraction industries, the decision to buy the stuff elsewhere and damn the consequences was the moment we put ourselves at the mercy of "the market" and all its vagaries.'"
I completely agree. I remember listening to Michael Heseltine going on about Gas fired power stations being the cheaper option. I was quite gobsmacked. It just seemed blindingly obvious to me if we had to purchase gas from overseas to fuel these things we were at the mercy of the market. I am sure he could point to figures at the time that said they were cheaper but it seemed to me a totally short termist outlook but then he is a Tory and that is how they view economics. You go with the price today and tomorrow something else will come along. The fact you may shaft yourself long-term was not his concern.
