Cameron just think he's being "cool" ie pandering to what he thinks is the current "trend". Sadly for him, he's annoyed most of his party and its supporters.

I agree he's annoyed most of his party and its supporters, but it merely shows what the majority of the Tory Party are really like.

No - it's a rights issue, being opposed by a minority of bigoted homophobes; the majority of the population can't see what all the fuss is about and would happily see the legislation passed so that parliament can get on with more important things, like demonising the disabled or dismantling the education system.

Quite possibly so .... and add to that the approximately one in ten voters who are gay who will be checking to see which way their MP voted and taking this into account at the next election.

Craig Whittaker, for example, is the MP for Calder Valley, in whose constituency lies Hebden Bridge, often touted as the Lesbian capital of the UK.
Is this Tory MP so highly principled that he's prepared to lose an awful lot of votes? Or does he think they're all lefties whose vote he wouldn't have got anyway? Or is he just totally out of of touch with his constituency? ... or is it (more likely in my view) simply that he couldn't have faced the constituency Tory reselection comittee if he'd voted any other way?

I think they'll be more concerned with the approximately 9 in 10 that are not gay looking to see how their MP voted. UKIP will have a field day at the next election.

If any-thing I would suggest that part of history has played a huge part in attitude changes and the promotion of equality.

I think Dally is trying to suggest that all heterosexuals that would vote Conservative are homophobic, which is clearly totally wrong.

It's a bit like when kirkstaller (where is that delightful individual by the way?) makes comment that would have you believe that you being a 'Christian" and being homosexual are incompatible.

Thankfully both Dally and kirkstaller are irrelevant constructs on an RL messageboard, worryingly, people who share their "views" exist in the real world, and can vote.

Some years ago, just before John Paul II died, he issued an encyclical (IIRC), which stated that [ieven[/i women who didn't or couldn't have children still had value.

Which was nice of him.

But the whole attitude toward women in organised religions – particularly, but not exclusively, the Abrahamic ones – is quite astonishing, whether you see it in the idea that a woman has to cover herself to stop a man being 'tempted' by her to the kind of slavery and abuse of the Magdalene Laundaries (once again in the news), and in both of those sorts of situations, women themselves acquiesce in the situation.

Religion (and other ideologies) can make some people do utterly illogical and brutal things. But gender and sexuality do seem, so often, to be at the heart of that, as though it is far more terrifying and threatening than, say, things that are actually mentioned in the [iBible[/i, for instance.

I think it's partly an abject terror of other people having fun, TBH.
