A bit like when in Oz years ago they played the German anthem for the Israeli team then.
As people are picky about what they get their news from, I found it on the Guardian website:
www.guardian.co.uk/world/2003/no ... nnis.spain
They also didn't have the anthem at all for the visiting Ghanian football team in 08 so they sent someone out and found one. They lined up before the second half to sing it.

| Flags are a constant source of error.
At Headingley I think it's a tradition that, when whenever Union Flags are carried by cheerleaders, at least one flag has to be upside-down.
At the 1948 London games, so much attention had been paid to the flags of visiting nations, that they forgot to provide a Union Flag, and Roger Bannister (non-competitor, you may be surprised to learn) had to go and get a little one out of the back of an official's car (breaking the car window to do it) just in time for the opening ceremony.
Anyone slower might not have made it !!!

Surely it just means the cheerleader in question is in distress. Did you notice this at the Cas game by any chance?

I can't genuinely recall which games I've seen it at but the Cas game would be a likely candidate for distress, I'll grant you that.
There was one game this season where half the flags were upside down, I think it's probably because it's easy to slide the pole in the wrong end.
(Back in the day when Puig Aubert used to frequent this forum, I would have re-phrased that.)

| Who the hell designed a flag that could be hung upside down even by mistake ?
I mean, they aren't the most complicated of icons are they, a few stripes, a bit of colour, it can't be beyond anyones wit to design one that could be hung upside down, inside out, back to front, machine wash at 20 degress and spin dry ?
I quote the Japanese flag as an example.

Surely the Italian battle flag would be better?

Aye, well, there are loads of flags that can be hung upside down by mistake.
Horizontally striped ones, the stars and stripes, almost any with a device superimposed onto them (e.g. NZ, Oz, Spain).. etc etc.
But, putting that aside...
The red diagonal cross in the Union flag is the cross of St Patrick which once represented the whole of Ireland, much of which is now a separate republic and not part of the UK.
The flag of Northern Ireland is a St. George's cross with a red hand in the middle.
So ... there's no real reason to keep that red diagonal cross and, with that removed, the Union flag would then be symmetrical in both the horizontal and vertical planes.
Sorted.
Oh, and before anyone mentions it ... the reason there's no St David's cross (for Wales) in the Union flag is because Wales is a principality, not a kingdom. England and Wales are the same Kingdom.
I think it was one of the King Edwards (no, not a potato) who subsumed Wales into his English kingdom
And if any Welsh get uppity about it, just remind them that Henry VII (the fella with zero claim to the throne and who got lucky when Richard III was killed at Bosworth) was Welsh.

| Time to get back onto thread,
1/ 3 security guards working on the games are arrested for being illegal immigrants.
2/ Hundreds locked out of Old Trafford last night, due to " ticket failure"
3/ According to David Cameron, the olympics came in "under budget". From a bid of £2.8 billion ( forget the VAT to an estimated £9 billion total cost. My O level maths tells me that is over budget by at least 3xs.

Which proves the vetting has worked. 3 out of 13000, not bad ratio.

| It's only worked if it has a 100% success rate, ergo, it's failed.
Don't really matter, as there will be no Muslim terrorist threat, it's Ramadan.

If you think ramadan would be enough to prevent a terrorist attack then you're off your trolley
