Toshiba and HP are good makes so you are unlikely to go far wrong with those. But as with all these types of questions, it depends what he wants to do with it. If it's for general email, internet browsing, word processing etc, they will be fine. If he's into graphic design, video editing, digital photo processing or hardcore gaming, they wouldn't.

lenovo aren't a shadow of the old IBM machines supposedly, I liked hp until mine decided to die on me last week and I found many others had the same problem. Had 3 or 4 Toshibas in our house, all lasted a good 3 years of heavy use except for my dad's old one which started turning itself off a lot but he did do a lot on it and we repaired it anyways
