Anyway, I did alright through Thatchers era, self employed, as independent and invincible as a young man in his 20s and 30s thinks he always is, as unwilling to pay for services used by other people as a young man always is, blaming my fathers generation for the worlds ills as every young man does.

I've grown up since then.

But nevertheless the truth remains, I voted for her and I did ok and my young family benefited too

I did OK in the 1980's too, also self-employed, not because of or despite Thatcher but because I was in the right skill at the right time.
I never voted for her but my vote for the centre-left SDP in 1983 had the same effect, i.e. it was part of the split in the left-of-centre vote and it let the right-right in.
An unforeseen consequence for which I have carried a degree of guilt ever since for letting them in.

Another unforeseen consequence, but this time beneficial, was that I believe it led to Kinnock's clean-up of Labour, kicking out the Degsy Tendency and the other so-called socialists who were actually anything but, thereby re-aligning Labour in the centre-left ground in my view.
Blair then went further and occupied the wet-right ground as well, a step I found unpalateable but which I tolerated because who else could I vote for?
My background is working class but outward appearances would suggest middle class ... either way, my views on fairness, humanity, common decency and what government is for remain unchanged.
Hence, I despised Thatcher and my lip curls when I think of Cameron.

As for Buthelezi being used to undermine the arguements about Apartheid you should know that the South Africans used Buthelezi and the Zulus like the British used Loyalists in Northern Irealnd. They bought them, off used them to kill their political rivalries and to promote tribal warfare in SA to undermine the ANC
