Again, subjective.

I'm sure you're the pinnacle of style.

Quote: LovesToSpooge "I'm with Sally, black cherry boots go with most things and are far more interesting than plain old black.

I haven't worn a suit for any occasion in 20 years +. I don't require one for work, so I'll be damned if I'm buying a suit just to wear once every few years to events I don't really wish to be at.

Now I'm reluctantly attending a wedding in early September. My original plan was to attend in my black cherry Redwing 9011's, chino's, a pale green shirt, dark green tie, and top it off my Goodwear J A Dubow A-2 27998 in seal brown horsehide. However I've now been advised by my sister in law that I can't attend in the above, not if I wish too feature in the wedding photo's. Which I don't wish too, but my bother insists I do. So as not to rock the boat in comes a change of plan.

I still decided to not go down the suit route but rather buy a sports jacket that I can where time and time again and get some mileage out of. So out goes the A-2 and incomes a green Harris tweed jacket. With the only other change being dependent on the weather. Fine, and it'll be chino's. Anything but fine, and it'll be British racing green moleskin trousers( I'm going very much down the green route this year, with the key too it being different shades of green). This has thankfully been approved by all concerned. Good on you for changing your mind ... and the tweed sounds great.
I'm all for freedom of expression in matters of dress but someone else's wedding day is their day and to buck their conventions too much would have been impolite.
So, eusa_clap.gif

Quite a bit was bought from eBay and also from various charity shops and car boot sales. The last suit I bought new, retail was a Crombie wool, cashmere & silk, navy pinstripe 2 piece from Army & Navy 8 years ago. It looks as pristine now as it did then, as do a couple of other bespoke suits and a bespoke overcoat that is older than I am. Shirts include Hilditch & Key, Eton and a couple of Emma Willis.

Where do folk stand on men wearing cologne? It's something I partake in occasionally, by which I mean once or twice a year and that's if I remember to put the stuff on in the first place. I'm still using up a bottle of Cool Water by Davidoff that I got given as a present what must be a decade ago.

The main reason for not wearing any, other than not wanting to come across smelling like a car air freshener, is I tend to develop headaches from strong perfumed smells (yes I'm weak like that). Just walking past the entrance to these strongly scented candle shops that particularly litter US shopping malls, can set me off. Perhaps worse than that are the many Airports that force you to walk through duty free immediately after passport control, where the air is so thick with fragrance it's bordering on foggy.

I have been a habitual user of light colognes for decades.
Not being a hugely sweaty person and not doing a manual job, I find a light spray under the armpits instead of cheap, nasty, pore-clogging and foul-smelling deodorants is neither overpowering or expensive.
Without getting into a long list, suffice to say that you don't need to pay a large sum to get a decent cologne. e.g. 4711, which people often think of as old-fashioned and associate with their grandma, is actually very light, balanced and fresh and can be bought by the half-litre!
In the long run, it probably works out cheaper than Lynx and other similar junk and smells so much better ... and gentler.

Aaargh, yes ... horrible ... and so many of them smell of over-ripe melon.

I have to go down the deodorant route unfortunately. I'm not a great sweater when at home in the UK but when working abroad I do tend dampen up rather quickly. Wearing a bright orange boiler suit, life jacket and hard hat, no matter how high the temperature rises rather forces my hand.

I used to have problems as you say with pore clogging, powdery deodorants. However over the last few years many brands have introduced dry, powder free deodorants that I find far better. In saying that at over £3 a pop, I'm rather conservative with their use.

Bright orange boiler suit, life jacket and hard hat don't pair well with a light cologne, I must confess.
Except maybe down Soho at the right time.

Deodorant = SureMen. Aftershave = Kouros. Suppose it's a bit dated now but always used it and it's held me good stead with the fairer sex since my yoof. Why change a winning combination?

White shirt, what ever colour tie takes your fancy but I tend to go for plain for a wedding (stripes etc for business).

I've worn a pocket square at the last few weddings, they make you look smart as a dart.

Finally, I always wear a buttonhole for a wedding. For me it has to be a white rose, but only because I'm a Yorkshireman.

Over the last few years I have noticed less people wearing button holes, but I won't change my standards just because other people can't be bothered.

I always wear a buttonhole too. I find it impossible to fasten the buttons, otherwise ....
