Tell us all then what your opinion is of Tony Blair and co who sanctioned a war with a lie and then sent hundreds of young men to their death. Also please say why the above despite being in office for as long as Thatcher never repealed a single one of her acts.
Or the first ever Labour Government led by Atlee who gladly sent thousands of Cossack and other ethnic Soviets to certain death in 1946 to appease there then hero Stalin.
How selective is you political bias.
Your grasp of history is as lax as your grasp of RL.'"

| Quote: SmokeyTA "Im not a fan.
But Thatcher is judged on what she did. Not what Blair did.
You only bring up Blair because of you haven’t progressed from the school yard. You are still stuck in ‘may dads bigger than your dad territory’ and you can’t defend those things she did, the only thing you can do is try to mitigate by saying ‘well someone else did something else and that was bad too’. Its pretty childish, but probably the most cogent thing you have ever managed to articulate on here.
Your only argument is to pretend im some flag bearer for Labour and stick with pretending your dad is bigger than mine.
Thatcherism being awful, selfish, greedy ideology doesnt mean i support everything Labour have ever done.'"
What he said too ^^^
You can soon tell who was an adult in the 70s and 80s ...etc

| Quote: El Barbudo "The 3 election wins is indisputable, however ...
In 1979 the conservatives got a swing of 8% which, with the multiplier effect of our FPTP electoral system, gave them an extra 62 seats from 43.9% of the vote.
In the 1983 election, the SDP/Lib Alliance polled 25% of the vote, splitting the left of centre vote, the Conservative share of the vote actually decreased to 42.4% but their number of seats soared, again due to the multiplier effect of FPTP.
In 1987, a miniscule 0.2% swing away from the conservatives lost them 21 seats (42.2% of the vote).
"Popular"? ... when 56.1%, 57.6% and 57.8% preferred someone other than Thatcher, I wouldn't call her popular.'"
She had an overall majority. Thats our democratic system. But of course you prefer the side of the undemocratic don't you?

Your memory is selective.
I love the bit where you mention that the NUM didn't pay the strikers.
Nice touch that, failing to mention that their funds had been sequestered by the government.
I repeat, I am no fan of Scargill, a sane man would have taken a ballot but he lost most of any public support he had by his pig-headed refusal to do so, also a sane man wouldn't call a strike in warm weather when there were millions of tons of coal stockpiled.
The witch probably licked her lips when he called that strike.
But, nonetheless, here's a couple of the things that Scargill was right about ...
1. The aim was to shut most of the pits to attract a buyer
2. McGregor was brought in to excecute that plan.
3. If the coal industry had been subsidised to the same degree as the nuclear power industry, coal could have been given away free with a pile of pounds notes on top of each sack.
The woman used the police and MI5 illegally against the miners in a purely political and ideological battle.
Merely one of her crimes in my eyes.
Whilst I will not celebrate her death, there is no way am I going to eulogise her.

Yes I think so. I have said I did not agree with some of her policies and have stated my account of living and working through this period. If you believe my account to be unbalanced then perhaps you would like to challenge a point or two

It's like RL refs, Mike – just as long as they make a decision (any decision!) that's all that matters.

In Bradford we had a massive reliance on the manufacture of wool and the various processes required to turn wool into yarn - that disappeared the city still has moved on. The city also a massive employer in heavy manufacturing - Croft, GEC, H&G, Baird - which Pat Wall the union leader single-handedly destroyed etc. none of that exists people move on - why is that the miners were unable to move on?

I was outlining what happened in the 70's & 80's to restore some balance to the spiteful and ignorant outpourings on this thread as it was the domestic issues that have caused this deep anger. But you go off on your Pinochet tangent because you seem to think that is as significant. If you want to move to foreign affairs then there are also powerful points in her favour there too.

Harold Shipman was a fairly caring doctor. Other than to those he killed of course.
