Scott was at pains to stress it's not an Alien prequel and it's a stand alone film. Well, for my money, he's remade Alien just not as good with nowhere near the tension of Alien.
Well made, looks great, well acted but, frankly, watch Alien instead.'"
To be fair, ANYTHING compared to 'Alien' is going to suffer in comparison, it is probably the finest horror film ever made.
The 3 sequels couldn't come close to matching it, so a prequel doesn't stand much chance, does it?

| Parts of the original Alien are good, but its very, very slow to get going. They also never explained (actually across all the Aliens movies although I know they took ever-increasing liberties with timings) how the heck it grew from the size of a rat to bigger than a man without seemingly eating anything. Or did I miss the bit where it raided the canteen?

| I'd have loved to have seen Stanley Kubrick do the Prometheus film. That'd have been special.
I also can't wait for the Hitchcock film. I hope its going to be a good one.

| Don't waste your money even for 2d, visually great, but leaves too many questions and isn't engaging enough.
Michael Fassbender was good and Idris Elba is an actor i really like and felt should have had a bigger part.

Similar to my thoughts. Expected very little but found the film to be pretty interesting and entertaining.

Fair comments although I think the Exorcist still stands the test of time for being ahead of its time in the horror genre.

Would have to agree with that. Any horror film that involves a child is always more disturbing than the slash and gore nonesense.
1/ The Exorcist
2/ Poltergeist
3/ The Shining
4/ Don't Look Now
5/ The Omen
Just going off on a tangent a bit, but seeing as we seem to be fans of realing acting and writing. Has anyone else been watching bbc3 on saturday nights over the past 12 months? been some wonderful Scandinavian series shown. The Killing, Borgen and The Bridge.

| Seen about 50 films since I last used this thread, don't worry I won't bore everyone with all the reviews. Here's a few recent ones i've seen.
Like Crazy - Touching & believable love story, Felicity Jones was very good.
Shame - Superbly made film, very slow but both Fassbender and Mulligan were excellent.
Man on a Ledge - Reasonable but not sure how Sam Worthington keeps getting roles. Genesis Rodriguez underwear scene is worth the rental fee alone!!
Beginners - A charming, well made film. Polished performances and some poignant moments.
Descendants - Enjoyed the way the film tackled the complexity of human emotions within a family at a time of tradegy.
Dark Shadows - All over the place, not quite sure what it wanted to be. A few laughs along the way which helped it to be more bearable.
Avengers - Really enjoyable, loved Iron Man's one liners and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk.
Girl with the Dragon tattoo - David Fincher did a great job with this, dark and atmospheric.
Gonna stop now, could go on forever.

Thought that was a lot better than the original. More emphasis it seems on the fascism side which got a bit lost during the run-of-the-mill drama direction in it. I think she might have been a bit better as well than the girl that did the original part i.e. she felt like a better fit for the role. The emotion of it didn't really register in the first because it felt a bit silly but Fincher managed to rein in those bits although it's probably the weakest film he's done since [iPanic Room[/i.

Always on a hiding to nothing re-making a film which is so popular, it just gets viewed as another hollywood re-make. I said to my daughter who loves the original trilogy that Fincher wouldn't just make it for the sake of it. She's lost faith since 'Let the right one on'/'Let me in' re-make. I thought he did a good job and managed to somehow make it his own. I forgot he did Panic Room, oops!

Noomi Rapace was fantastic as Lisbeth Salander. As I read somewhere if you've seen the original then you don't need to see the Hollywood remake. Why Hollywood made their version is beyond me.

| Saw Prometheus yesterday. I thought it was decent. Not really a massive fan of Alien or horror films in general so my expectations were probably lower than most. I definitely wasn't desperate to see it but always do Orange Wednesdays and it was that or MIB 4. The 2 hours went pretty quick.
I enjoyed Fincher's version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but i've not seen the original swedish version at all.
Next week might give Ill Manors a watch.
