Presumably you also "lived" the power cuts, the sh*t piling up in the street, the dead not being buried, the continuous tag of "the sick man of Europe"
Or do you have a selective memory?'"
Well I presume you do as the power cuts were under the Heath government.

| Quote: XBrettKennyX "The most amusing thing about some posts on this thread is that they somehow see Thatcher as being a figurehead for the rich elite, somehow stamping on the working class.
They couldn't be more wrong.
Thatcher was all about breaking down so called "class barriers". Opportunity for all replaced "the old boys networks".
Of course the Socialists were terrified of this (as were some members of the Tory party to be fair).
If working class people were given opportunity, and a route to a more affluent future, they may not vote for a monkey with a red rosette. Given a monkey had better policies than the Labour party at the time this was a real worry. So they stay at home and the state pays for them instead of working in steel, coal and all industry we once were proud to have and contribute to the system? I still work underground and have done for 36 yrs,I have seen the butchering with my own eyes.12 months I was on strike fighting to keep my pit and jobs, not for a pay rise but a JOB.When they dig the hole for the evil cow I hope it's big enough to put the scabs in who took their pieces of silver and run.ROT IN HELL.

Was she as popular as Tony Blair?
After all he too swept to victory with three straight election wins in 1997, 2001 & 2005

More the sheltering of Pinochet, section 28, sending the SAS to train the Khmer Rouge, the corrupt arms deals with Saudi Arabia, relationship with PW Both, response to Nelson Mandela.
Though Im not sure how miners striking for a few extra perks and bit more money is ‘awful greed’ yet the systematic rape of the country natural resources and national wealth and the disgusting widening of the gap between rich and poor, as well as the casino banking that were all part of Thatcherism isn’t greed, but something to be admired.

| Jon Snow has just tweeted that MPs & Lords can claim up to £3,750 each for returning to Parliament for today's tribute. Parliament is back in session on Monday, if Cameron had waited until then, it wouldn't have cost a penny.
So much for austerity

Notwithstanding your complete ignorance, would that include the "lefties" like John Healy and others who have refused to return today, precisely because it is a complete waste of time and money.
I wonder if all the "righties" will be submitting no claims at all?

| Quote: Lord Elpers "The suffering and misery for the majority of the population at the time was caused by the greedy and selfish unions undemocratic industrial action. If there was misery for the strikers that was self inflicted. The unions mishandling of the situation brought on a popular tidal wave against them that they have never recovered from and is why they have since vilfied Mrs Thatcher in an attempt to cover over their failures and guilt in the same manner that Scargill tried to cover over his bald head. Both failures. Mrs T in her final years made errors but it should be remembered that it was the Conservative party and not the public that ousted her.
Dennis Healey was one of the architects of the disaster that required the IMF bail out and led to the Winter of Discontent. I think you can discount what that pompous oaf said as it showed how out of touch he was for saying it and you for quoting it. May I remind you how popular she was as the people of this country swept her to power for 3 straights election wins on the trot.
The country needed a radical overhaul and in undertaking this task she naturally made enemies from the sector that felt the most pain. If you wish to believe just one negative aspect of her leadership thats up to you. But the history books will show there were two sides to the lady and the positive one was by far the most important.'"
As for the miners, they never recovered from the closing of all the mines.

They were not only during the Heath government.
The point is that they were directly as a result of Unions trying to blackmail the Country.

Well of course they didn't. What is your point?

As opposed to the bankers who would never do such a thing, and haven’t of course taken amounts many many many many times bigger than what even the most strident of the striking miners were asking for, literally billions of times more.
And obviously we cant trace the de-regulation and change in trading systems which not only facilitated this, but pretty much guaranteed it to happen to Reagan/thatcher, and more specifically in this country 27/10/1986.
