Putin has forgotten Russia’s own recent history during the Second World War. The Russians like all individuals will fight harder when the war is taking place on your homeland. They themselves suffered severe atrocities and hardship but unlike the occupying force they had the resolve to see if through with arms supplied by the allies.
Ukraine could fall to Russia but not until they have a very bloody fight. The question will become do the Russian people have his resolve when the dead and wounded are returned,

Do you mean the west are not 100% committed to the Ukraine, or that not 100% of the west are committed, also I would suggest that there is a difference between being scared and being cautious.
