The other end of the question is that conversely, being a racist doesn't mean you can't write funny comedy. As a prime example, Bernard Manning famously said (on live TV):

We are getting so precious that soon nobody will be able to say anything without someone suggesting there are racist overtones. For me this is a complete non-story - i am not offended in slightest and I bet deep down neither are 99% of the population. So what if she has a view about white people who really cares? - pity society is so politically correct it is so dull. That's because the character was based on the views that were strongly held by alot of people. The SitComs were all about liberals defusing tensions and brainwashing the masses into thinking that such thinking was idiotic - which is a bit odd as when the Alf's of this world were young we had an Empire and such thinking was absolutely mainstream, elitist thinking.

I find it daft that people on here righteously foam at the mouth over those old programmes when they probably had the biggest ever influence on defusing racism among the majority of Britons.
