Smith was never employed as a teacher. He gained access to kids by being a councillor and later the Mayor of Rochdale, subsequently becoming a school governor and a patron of local organisations for young people. He took his role as a governor so seriously that he dished out corporal punishment in children's homes round Rochdale and got no enjoyment from it whatsoever. Honest!.

I am at a total loss as to how Alison Saunders came to the view that to further investigate the accusations against Greville Janner would not be "in the public interest". What about the interest of his alleged vicitms?

Supposedly too ill to face further police questioning, he was well enough to attend the HoL before these latest allegations surfaced

While I am prepared to accept that in the end he will be too ill to stand trial (dementia is a cruel illness) isn't usually the job of a judge to decide if someone is fit to stand trial?

He was fit enough to vote in HoL on 26 November 2013.

If I read it correctly it's not that, it's that CPS seem to have decided that he isn't compos mentis enough to be interviewed. Not that they interview people, but hey. I fully accept that despite this, he may well be up to the standard for the HOL, where the requirement is seemingly to have a pulse. I'm not sure if it's mandatory.

I always thought it was up to the judiciary to decide whether anyone was fit to stand trial, not the DPP. I'm not usually one for conspiracy theories but there have been numerous rumours that Dando was also investigating child abuse by VIPs and that investigation led to her being silenced with extreme prejudice

Mmm, having seen someone go downhill with this 18 ish months isn't that much of a rapid-onset, depends how bad he was when in HoL, I actually thought it was a requirement. Mind the Guinness case was the first thing that came to my mind too.

Frank Beck, who was convicted in the case where he named Jenner was not a lucky guy. A couple of years after sentence he conveniently dropped dead after game of badminton. The fact that his appeal against conviction was coming up is, I am sure, totally unrelated.

According to the Sunday Times, just two weeks ago Janner signed a request to extend his membership of the HoL despite his leave of absence

The Times has also discovered that the barrister advising Alsion Saunders worked, until recently at the same chambers as Janner's son
